Description:

A kioslave for RAR archives.
This is a very basic kioslave that supports RAR archives. Only listing, reading and deleting files and directories is currently support.
I use code from ark and krusader to make this (thanks!).
It depends on unrar or rar to handle the archives.

Changelog:

0.6

Add a class to handle RAR archives
Speedups

please please please go on with this, you are an angel - I love to see this rar kioslave work like the zip one does... The only thing I miss in the zip ioslave is you can't cut/copy and go to another directory and paste...

anyway, its wonderfull you make this, a nice ioslave is so much better to work with as ark...

I hope you keep up the work on this - seamless integration of rar and ace (like tar and zip already have) would really improve KDE for many users.

Btw. if you're using Debian (well, it could bem right? :)) you might possibly want to talk to the kalyxo guys - I'm sure your package (if you decide to make one) will fit nicely into their repository. You'll reach quite a few users this way.

I'll do better.
I'm thinking to put this code in kdenonbeta. Later, put in kdebase.

 What about ark ?

Isn't it better to create a kio_slave for ark ?
This gives support for lot more of archive formats.

Creating a kioslave to all formats takes almost the same work that creating several, one for each format.
I was talking with a ark developer (Henrique) and he said that they are thinking in convert the whole ark to kioslaves, but one for each compression format.
But, if you want this now, a lot of code I used came from krusader and ark.
Krusader has a kioslave for several compression formats that already works well. It has some bugs, but works.
You will ask me why I made this if krusader already has. Because when I discovered the krusader, I has already made almost all of the code.

 kio_rar ntergation

It seems you don't have to do something to intergrate your ioslave to konqueror. Konqueror developers have to create a more generic support for ioslave intergration.
Have a look at http://lists.kde.org/?l=kfm-devel&m=109696946721557&w=2 for more details....

Thanks.
I have just found and changed the code. I will test the change (compile the whole kdebase) and put here later (maybe tomorrow).

 Support for 7-zip?

Great to see this kio.

Today, I read an article about 7-Zip. Free algorithm compressing even better than rar.

The article (unfotunately in german language) can be found here:

http://www.pro-linux.de/berichte/appfokus/7zip/7zip.html

Homepage is:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Linux port can be found at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/p7zip/

Maybe you're interested in doing a kio for this too, if you'll find the time one day ;-) .

Thanks a lot for your work on free software!

Do you read minds???
I've compacted the kio_rar-0.2 folder with 7z. It took only 264kb against 462kb in bzip2. wow!!
But I have to say that for some files it doesn't compress so much.

Of course I cannot read minds, it simply has been coincidence :) .

Compression always depends on the filetype to be compressed. PNG files for example are already zip compressed, so compressing it again will bring small ratios.

RAR has the disadvantage to be proprietary. So, will I be able to read an archive in 5 years?

That's no choke: I recently needed back a very old file, and I found it on a backup CD which I created with zip years ago as I still was using windows.

So I'd prefer 7-zip over rar, and it was my first thought as I saw your app posted here.

Thanks a lot for your work!

Is this .iso kioslave in kde cvs or only in krusader?

I hope they can include it in KDE itself...
