I get an error for an invalid URL (it contains spaces) from the proxy here. To solve this replace the spaces with "%20".

Hmmm...Your anti-aliased Verdana font looks way different than mine. Mine just doesn't look right, particularly lowercase m. I'm using Mandrake 8.1 and I read somewhere that hinting was disabled in Mandrake's freetype2 rpm, so I added it myself, rolled my own rpm, but still looks kinda crappy.

You've got a nice screenshot.

 KDE - MDK & Fonts

I found I had all sorts of font problems with Mandrake 8.1, about a third of the installed fonts simply looked like the same bold italic font. One work around solution I found was to disable anti aliasing. That fixed all the font problems, but I'm left with un aliased fonts. Hopefully I'll find a better answer to my problems for now, but if you really want Verdana, I find that no AA is the way to go.
