Description:

The guy that hosted the original Firefox & Thunderbird icons was caught by mozilla and forced to take them down. I however have put them back up, and was smarter about it, but I wont say how. *cough*fake info*cough* I managed to retain the 2.3 install instructions:

How to install 2.3:
This theme can now be installed by simply extracting the tar.bz2 file into
either $HOME/.kde/share/icons/hicolor or
$HOME/.kde/share/icons/crystalsvg or if you want to install it
systemwide (making it available even to gnome)
into /usr/share/icons/hicolor or appropriate directories in your kde
installation (/usr/kde/3.2/share/icons/hicolor on gentoo).

As you can see, the person who posted these icons is doing so in knowing violation of the trademark rights of the Mozilla Foundation.

We want to preserve our trademark rights, while making it easy for people to use the Firefox logos to label official builds of Firefox. We are still working out exactly how to do that - it's a learning process - but there's no need for behaviour like this.

I would ask people please not to download this package.

As I do agree that he is posting something that he has no right to post, these updated icons are better than what is included with the install of Firefox & Thunderbird.

They are more crisp and clean looking.

I'm looking at the icon that came with the tar ball I installed and it's jaggy around the edges and looks like a poor gif on some geocities website that some one cut out of a screen shot.

Perhps these are being put out here because what is being provided is not up to par.

"these updated icons are better than what is included with the install of Firefox & Thunderbird."

That's as may be - we are working with the original poster to get them made available legally. However, making them available illegally meantime is not the way to behave.

As an avid Firefox user I understand Mozilla wants to protect it's hard earned trademarks, but don't understand how this is an infringement of those rights.

As another poster pointed out the Firefox logo is really cool, but the quality of the icon is third rate. I don't see the harm in a user creating and sharing a superior icon for us to associate with your product on our desktops. Isn't that kind of like free advertising?

Clearly the person who reposted these has a bad attitude, and I suspect he doesn't know how to build a zip archive either (because I couldn't open it). Wouldn't it be possible however, for Mozilla to allow the original artist to share these? They are clearly marked 'For Firefox/Thunderbird' and he isn't taking credit for the original designs.

I don't understand the issue here, but would really like these icons to (preferably legally) grace my desktop.

Sincerely,
A concerned and confused user,

Ravenslay3r

the original poster included an Anti-SCO wallpaper in the archive... seemingly unaware of the irony.

In his original post he seemed proud to admit he didn't read licenses, didn't care about them - and would post these icons no matter what.

Yet he's decrying SCO, who claim EXACTLY THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WITH LINUX USERS.

So on one hand he attacks SCO, and on the other hand gives them ammunition for their (misguided) cause.

Linux is not about misusing other's property - its about sharing willingly. Please respect the Mozilla Foundations need to protect their trademarks, because there are other companies out there keen to step on them like a bug...

Who are you and why have you reposted these icons knowing that it is illegal? And in response to 123go, As you can see, I did not mean what I said, and I was by no means proud of it, I just wanted people to have icons to go along with the main icon theme of KDE and gnome. And BTW, I hate SCO, and I always will, everybody that works for SCO, supports SCO, and everybody that do not dis like SCO can all kiss my ass!

 Looks OK to me

I just went and read their restrictions and in my opinion these "buttons" icons fall within their guidelines which state.

Approval is not required to put buttons expressing your support for Mozilla or our software on your web site, including the Get Firefox buttons or similar buttons you may create yourself.

These aren't "buttons expressing support for Firefox", and they haven't been placed on a web site (in the <img> sense), so that clause doesn't apply.

Could you then just please give a hint which clause they do affect (i'm not a lawyer and i couldn't read anything in the license, that would explicitly forbid to create standalone icons and use or share them)
I think a lot of guys around here are similar confused, so if you exaclty know, why this conflicts with the terms of the mozilla license - please enlighten us.

Thanks

 Am I just too dumb?

I really cannot see, what's wrong about those icons.
I mailed gerv (but got no reply yet) and watched the mozilla licensing page before - without seeing anything that would forbid creation and sharing of such icons.

Please: does anyone have a usefull link with further information on this (or to be more precise: can anyone tell me, if i'm still allowed to use different icons than that coming with the mozilla package?)

Thanks

(ps: if i'm not, mozilla should really include icons bigger than 32x32 - sorry but they're useless on my desktop (and no!: 48x48 is not ok, i prefer 128x128))

technically not, but as far as i understood gerv, i'm just not allowed to use icons different from the officially distributed ones (ok, no one can see what i'm doing on my desktop - but i'd like to honor the mozilla foundation wishes)

changing the wind'oh icons isn't that hard either, btw.

I think what gerv means is that someone can't make icons based on their artwork and distribute them. Or maybe someone just can't make icons for the mozilla products at all without their consent, although that's not very clear and there are lots of icons available for all mozilla products, mostly in the Mac community, some of them even based on original mozilla artwork. It's not very clear to me what the problem is in this case yet, but if these icons infringe on any copyrights I think some solution should be found and copyrights should be respected. On the other hand, I don't agree with the poster posting these icons again after the original author removed them. I think it's up to the original author to decide if he wants to find a solution and continue to distribute them or not. Anyways, to me it seems that so far both sides in this debate are a bit over the edge. I think some clarification is needed from the mozilla project, and I'm not sure that gerv is representing their official view on this matter, but again, if that is their official position then it should be enforced and respected.

I won't download them. As an avid user of GPL (and other open-source-licensed) applications, I strongly respect the rights of copyright holders to do as they see fit with their creations, including the licensing thereof.

If you respect copyrights, I would suggest that you remove these.
