One one side I think that the user may be worried by too many different icons, on the other side I sometimes have the same problem to distinguish between my ppp dialup and the wireless card.

So I could make it an option.

Now the next problem would be to create icons for ppp, ethernet and wireless for the 5 states 'not connected', 'connected', 'incoming traffic', 'outgoing traffic' and 'traffic in both directions'.

Any volunteers?

I think you could find some icons with a license that would allow you to use them. It would be a start atleast. I have a co-worker, who is a graphic artist, I may be able to get to clean them up if need be.

Sure, there are enough free icons to do some copy&paste. That's how I made the current ones. But still I need an idea how the icons could look like...

Anyway, I put it on my TODO list and will wait for further inspiration. :-)

To go along further with this suggestion you could allow icon themes.
To simplify the number of icons you could use something along these lines:
- ppp: phone
- network: cable
- wifi: tower with waves )))

Then incoming would be an arrow pointing down, outgoing would be an arrow pointing up. Disabled would be grayscale, enabled would be colour.

This would make it so you had only 3 icons really for each type only with small variations for the different states.

I gave my 'eth0' the slightly more meaningful alias 'Cable'. However the pop-up status windows (left or middle clicks) still show the name 'eth0' in the titlebar. I think it is logical to see the alias carried forward into child windows.

Graph plot ?

I don't know if it's me being simple, a bug in your application or something
that is wrong with my system, but I can't see a graphical plot of my traffic (i.e screenshot 1)
I had no problems installing & configuring this service whatsoever.
I can see the small icons in my kicker, the tooltiptext and the little box with my data (for example, my IP), but sign of the graphical plot.

Any ideas ? - tkx in advance

I think the debian package should rather recommend the wireless-tools package than depend on it.

On desktop machines (like mine) the package is not needed and with a wireless card the package is needed anyway.

the traffic monitor should store his last position. I didn't wan't it in the middle of the screen. I place it somewhere in the bottom right corner.

I also wonder why it does this as I am only hiding it and showing it again. Maybe this is some kind of feature of QDialog?

Anyway, I will have a look at it. And the dynamic number of entries in the context menu you asked for is one of the next tasks on my TODO list. ;-)

possibly you shouldn't take qdialog. Perhaps a simple (toplevel) qwidget is better.

If you use KDE, just put the window in the right position, right click on the window caption, en select [advanced->save window settings)
kwin wil remember the position of the window and place it there in the future.

In Knemo's configuration dialog are prompts for custom context menu commands-- which I immediately mistook to mean Knemo's other custom commands (such as passing an option)... howto?!

I later figured out could eg. start Konqueror this way but thats not helpful -- there's plenty ways available already to do these things.

And if you make only one custom menu, the second still shows up as a blank entry.

However you must know -- this is a really nice app and I love it!

The entries are meant for people who wish to start/stop/restart/configure an interface with an external program or who wish to start something like KPPP to go online.

The next major release will allow a dynamic number of menu entries (for some people 2 slots are not enough) and will also handle this problem.

Happy that so many people like this little tool! :-)

Ah yes, the "illuminated release".

23:23 will be very hard as I released 0.2.2 on 9.00am and the line above says "Updated: 08/16/2004, 1:22".

Have to find out which secret algorithm stands behind "9.00 - 1.22". ;-)
