KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

    I was successfully able to compile for my ML10 box, and kmeno shows that it is running, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to configure Knemo, or where it's supposed to show up. Please be kind to a newbie and let me know where I went wrong.

    Hi Hackhound,

    I have written a short instruction on how to successfully install KNemo on Mandrake 10.0.

    I've tested it with 10.0 Download Edition and for me the solution worked. So please take a look at the following document, follow the steps in it and tell me if it worked for you too!

    It may be neccessary to open the configuration dialog manually by running

    kcmshell /usr/share/applnk/Settings/Network/kcm_knemo

    on the console after you have installed KNemo with the above solution, because KNemo won't display any icons in the system traybar until it is configured to do so.

    hi,

    where can i find a website for knemo?

    what are the plans for future versions? i would like to see network configuration ability. this would really rock, because windows does this a lot easier.

    Hi,

    there is no website other than this for KNemo. KNemo is just a hobby of mine, so I don't feel to setup and maintain a website for it. Even not on SourceForge.

    I think for a small program like KNemo this forum is quite enough.

    The upcoming 0.2.0 will have a nice traffic plotter. Next versions will support more statistics and a dynamic number of menu entries in the context menu. This way the user can have entries for NetGo or KNetworkConf to configure their interfaces.

    and distributed and activated by default!

    This is what Sarahb523 wrote how you can trigger your ppp connection from KNemo:

    To cooperate knemo with kppp open the config of you ppp0 device and enter this as start command:
    kstart --skiptaskbar kppp -q -c account_name

    and for stop command:
    kppp -k -q

    disable "hide icon when not connected"

    in kppp set "dock to kicker when connected" to enabled. Now you can start/stop your ppp0 device from knemo systray icon

    I investigated a little... ;-)

    Triggering my isdn connection is possible by setting up knemo
    like this:


    • Enable "Display custom entries in context menu"

    • Under "Start": Menu Text: "Connect"

    • Command: "/usr/sbin/isdnctrl dial ippp0"

    • Under "Stop": Menu Text: "Disconnect"

    • Command: /usr/sbin/isdnctrl hangup ippp0"




    btw, what are the labels "Start" and "Stop" good for?

     Traffic Plotter

    I can't find a way to display the traffic plotter.

    Running Kde 3.2.3 (debian unstable).
    It compiled without problems and right-clicking pops up the menu with "configure Knemo". In the config page is the Traffic plotter [tab] and setup page
    - but middle click behaves exactly like a right-click :(

    Any idea??

    Then you are still running 0.1.10. Open the context menu and look under "About KNemo".

    It is not enough to stop KNemo in the Service Menu of KDED and start it again. You have to kill KDED and start KDED again to get the new installed KNemo. Or log out of KDE and log in again.

    Hi,

    I launch Knemo with kcmshell /usr/share/applnk/Settings/Network/kcm_knemo &, and it runs good (I can configure it) but when after 30 seconds the tray icons disapear ... I can't find Knemo in the service management, how could I fix it ?

    Please follow the instructions here: http://www.eris23.de/knemo/INSTALL.Mandrake

    If you follow these instructions KNemo will be available in the Service Manager of KDE... it is under 'KDE Components'.

    Then start KNemo in the Service Manager, make sure an interface is configured in the configuration dialog and then the icon should appear in the system tray.

    I really like knemo, and I have even removed kisdndial,
    and use knemo to trigger dialup.

    But there is one thing that bothers me silghtly...
    I wish I could see if I am online or not from the icon of knemo, somehow like in (sorry) windows...
    Knemo should detect when an interface
    is a dialup connection, and then change
    its icon to reflect the status of the connection.

    Apart of that it rocks!! As I said already, I think it should be included, shipped and activated by default in kde.

    (Maybe later you can use dbus to get the
    information about the interfaces)

    You can see if you are online or not. When you are offline the icon of KNemo will have a red cross in its corner to indicate that this interface is not connected. When KNemo detects that you are online (it does so by finding that the interface has an IP address assigned) the cross will vanish.

    That should not be necessary. It doesn't matter if you are monitoring a dialup interface or an ethernet interface. The rules are the same:

    If the output of the command 'ifconfig interfacename' contains the words 'UP' and 'inet' the interface is detected as online and the red cross in the icon will vanish. Otherwise the interface is offline and you will see a red cross on the icon (or the icon will vanish, if you selected 'Hide icon when not connected' in the settings):

    well not for me infortunately... :-(

    In fact my isdn interface ippp0 is
    up all the time, even if I'm not connected...
    It even has an ip-address, look at this output:

    cannot test it right now... but I am 99% sure that
    after doing '/etc/init.d/isdnutils stop'
    there is no interface ippp0 anymore

    Then the solution would be to put

    /etc/init.d/isdnutils start
    isdnctrl dial ippp0

    into a start script and to put

    isdnctrl hangup ippp0 (not sure about this)
    /etc/init.d/isdnutils stop

    into a stop script and excute them from KNemo. Then you have the desired behaviour with the 'red cross'. ;-)

    I think there is a conceptual difference between network interfaces in windows and Linux.

    In Linux, and interface can be UP and not connected at the same time.
    Just remove the RJ45 from ur NIC and u'll see...
    The interface will stay up, even it is not really connected at this point of time...

    In windows however, an interface that is not connected is automatically down.

    Try to remove the RJ45 and type ipconfig... no more interface...

    IMHO, knemo should try to detect whether an interface is connected or not however, although I don't know of any method of doing that...
