Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.7

  • Add a global shortcut to toggle traffic plotters.

  • Find the interface of the default gateway again. (BR 328752)

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

  • Fix translation word puzzles, missing contexts. (BR 329095, BR 329097)

  • Add an include to fix broken compilation when using libnl >= 3.2.26.

  • LicenseGPL

    I have installed as you recommended for Mandrake 10. OE including the lines changes. Did not find the kcm_knemo.desktop in the location you mentioned, In fact did not find a folder named Internet in that place. Located kcm_knemo.desktop in the Knemo Folder used for installing and copied it to the location you recommended. Have rebooted but cannot find anything in Mandrake Control Centre that even vaguely looks like knemo in "Network and Internet" or in "Systems ---> Services".

    Are there some other things that also need to be done to enable a correct install into Mandrake 10 ??? or am I just looking in the wrong places ???

    I look forward to hearing from you and thanks. John

    Hi John,

    kcm_knemo is the desktop file for the configuration dialog and has nothing do to with the daemon (program) itself. To check if this module is installed correct run

    kcmshell kcm_knemo

    on the console and it should show the KNemo configuration dialog.

    > Have rebooted but cannot find anything in Mandrake Control Centre
    > that even vaguely looks like knemo in "Network and Internet" or in "Systems
    > ---> Services".

    I don't know about the Systems -> Services menu, this does seem to be a special Mandrak menu. "Network and Internet" should contain an entry "Network Monitor" which should open the configuration dialog if kcm_knemo.desktop is installed correct.

    The other thing is the daemon itself that you have to start before you can do something useful with the configuration dialog. Open KDE control center, KDE Components, Service Manager and in the list you should find an entry "KNemo" beside entries like "KMilo" or "KWriteDaemon". Use this dialog to start KNemo. If you can't find it here try on the console

    dcop kded kded loadModule knemod

    If this returns 'false' there are more problems with Mandrake installations than expected. Maybe some Mandrake 10 user can come up with a complete list of changes neccessary to install KNemo successfully.

    Thanks for your reply.

    There is no entry in the KDE Control Centre, Components, Service Manager although the Startup Services such as kmilo etc., are there.

    I ran kcmshell kcm_knemo and got the following :-

    [john@BIGPOND john]$ su
    [root@BIGPOND john]# kcmshell kcm_knemo
    QPixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used

    [root@BIGPOND john]# Mutex destroy failure: Device or resource busy
    ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 29634, errno = 2

    As you can see the console has stopped at that point. The Mutex destroy...... it started all by itself, I DID NOT start it. Strange huh ??

    I tried the dcop kded kded loadModule knemod and got the following result:-

    [root@BIGPOND john]# dcop kded kded loadModule knemod
    ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
    [root@BIGPOND john]#

    I perhaps should mention that I am using an Alcatel500 Modem/Router and have connected it via the LAN connection on my ASUS A7N8X-E-Deluxe Mainboard using eth0. I expect that this probably doesn't make any difference.

    I hope this info gives you some more insight into the trouble and you can guide me further.

    Thanks in advance. JOHN.

    Don't change to root as long as you don't want to use KNemo as root. But then you should login to KDE as root anyway...

    Try 'kcmshell kcm_knemo' again as user john. You can ignore those messages about 'mutex destroy', I have seen them many times and they are not related to KNemo nor do they cause trouble.

    Try the 'dcop kded kded loadModule knemod' also as user john and see if this works better.

    Ah, thanks for the KDE-CVS hint, this is indeed the problem. Could you please test the following fix:

    open knemod/interfacetray.cpp and replace the line 106

    about.setIcon( SmallIcon( "network_local" ) );

    with the following lines:

    #if KDE_IS_VERSION(3,2,90) // cvs
    about.setIcon( KGlobal::iconLoader()->iconPath( "network_local", -1 ) );
    #else
    about.setIcon( SmallIcon( "network_local" ) );
    #endif

    and tell me if it compiles for you!

    I thought maybe there are people out there using the 3.3 Alpha and I guess it has version 3.2.90.

    KDE_IS_VERSION checks if the version number is equal over larger so I think with 3.2.90 nothing can go wrong.

    I just right clicked on the tarball and selected "Actions" then "Extract here". I went into ROOT (and did not do a "su" ) and opened konsole and typed cd /"place where the knemo was located" and pressed Enter.
    Typed in ./configure --prefix=/usr

    The above is CRITICAL.

    Then I did "make" then "make install". Closed konsole and went back in to my account and there waiting for me was the Welcome to the Configuration Panel waiting for me. Clicked DEFAULT and the three interfaces eth0, eth1 and sit0 appeared. Deleted the eth1 and sit0, highlighted eth0 and clicked on APPLY then the little Icon appeared on the Taskbar i.e. the panel.
    A left click on the icon raised an "Interface Status" panel and which was running nicely.

    Checked that knemo was in KDE Control Centre......Components.......Service Manager and there it was in Startup Services and appropiately ticked.
    This was all done on a newley installed Mandrake 10 on my second hard drive so was totally clear of anything I had done on my main Mandrake 10

    Is it possible to get a larger icon since I am using a 21" Monitor and the Icon looks so tiny on the panel

    I happened on the solution only by accident. Just for the hell of it I thought I would use the ./configure --prefix=/usr to see what would happen because I had seen it used by a number of other different packages. It worked.
    Thanks for your very good effort in helping me solve the problem. Your advice pointed me into the right line of procedures.
    Hope to hear from you about the Icon size.
    Cheers. John.

    great to hear that it works for you now!

    About the icon, it is hard to offer something bigger because system tray icons are limited to 22x22 pixel.

    But maybe you want to try these one, they are a bit larger than the ones I made:
