KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

    Just fantastic !

    It's impressive how it works well with a usb wlan card (asus w167g)

    2 details perhaps to correct :
    - when wifi lan is connected in ad-hoc mode, the mode indecated by Knemo is "Ad", instead of "Ad-hoc" I suppose.
    - would it be possible to have a graphical traffic analyser like KNetStats without needing launching a seperated heavy graphical interface ?

    knemo is in Kubuntu already:

    https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/knemo

    In case mean: add knemo onto the kubuntu CDROM and be installed by default, well, to make this happen
    Hagbard and or we, the kubuntu developers, have to make it at least
    working/cooperating nicely with knetworkmanager.

    Unfortunately there are currently more pressing needs for the next kubuntu release so don't hold your breath.

    Volunteers are always welcome and can speed up inclusion considerably ;)

    Hi,

    could you please post the output of 'iwconfig' for your wlan interface when it is connected in ad-hoc mode?

    About the graphical traffic analyzer: when you middle-click on the interface icon KNemo opens a traffic plotter, is that what you meant?

    BTW: KNemo is not actively developed at the moment, as I am just in the process of having a house built which is rather time consuming! ;-) On the other hand I have no internet connection at home until we move into the new house which should be around the end of March.
    Just in case anybody wondered if KNemo is dead or if there will be a version for KDE 4.0...

    I tried to make knemo ver 0.4.6 work on my fedora core 4 but got error while make "no libattr.la", I was already install libattr and albattr-devel but again still not work.

    Hello,

    KNemo (sys backend) makes KDED use >90% CPU when a VPN interface becomes active. Specifically, I'm using vpnc/tun and have to unload the knemod module from KDED as long as I use the VPN connection. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the interface is already active or becomes active while running KNemo.

    Hi,

    what version of KNemo are you using? I had some (1 or 2) reports before that KNemo causes high CPU load on 2.6.18 kernels? Which version of the kernel do you use?

    I'm using the latest KNemo on 2.6.20, but I had the problem with all 0.4.x versions, running a variety of kernels. Since I tend to use VPN fairly often, this CPU issue is very frustrating and I looked for a solution but no one seems to mention tun interfaces with vpnc. Maybe the sys backend is parsing for some strings/properties that are not present/typical in virtual interfaces such as tun. I think PPTP VPN, which generates ppp interfaces, didn't have this bug. Otherwise, thank you very much for your work; it's a great piece of software!

    Sorry that I cannot help you any further with this but I have no experience with VPN connections e.g. I have no idea how to set up a test-VPN connection for debugging purposes.

    Only workaround is to use the nettools-backend - but I guess you are already aware of this.

    Hi!

    It's very good tool for me, thanks. :) I have seen a very small bug. I use WPA-PSK encryption on Channel 6 with a D-LINK DWL-G650 (Atheros chipset, madwifi-0.9.3) adapter and KNemo show, 'Frequency [Channel]: 2.437 GHz [-]' and 'Encryption: off'.

    Hi,

    the bug with the wrong encryption status I could verify on my own yesterday evening. Will check what is the reason for this.

    About the missing channel number: Do you use the nettools backend? - See the MISC tab in the configuration dialog of KNemo. The nettools don't seem to provide this information. Using the sys backend I get both information, the frequency and the channel number.

    The channel information always reads 0 (zero) when I am connected to any channel.
    Is this the same problem that others are reporting? I am running version 0.4.3 on KDE 3.5.6 on Fedora Core 6 kernel 2.6.20-1.2944.fc6 (non xen) on i686.
    Is this fixed in the latest release?
    Other than this very minor glitch, this is an excellent tool, and I am happy to have it. Thank you for your efforts.

    I just upgraded to the next available version, 0.4.7, and many problems, including the one that I wrote about, are fixed.

    Just a suggestion, you may want to include the instructions on how to start KNemo sutomatically on your main page.

    To start KNemo:
    "Go to the KDE Control Center -> Internet and Networking and open the KNemo configuration dialog (Network Monitor). There is now an option at the top of the dialog saying something like "Use KNemo to monitor your interfaces"."

    "Activate it and KNemo should start with KDE."

    I suggest to update to 0.4.7. The sysbackend is much improved since 0.4.6 and for me it shows the channel and the frequency.

    I used to be able to access Knemo from Control Center but after the most recent upgrade, the link is still in CC however, clicking on it no longer brings up the interface. Also, the links in the tray are gone. Any ideas how I can reinitialize the module? Thanks.

    Hi,

    what do you mean by 'link in the control center'? Do you mean KNemos entry?

    Please make sure that - if it is possible for you to open the control center entry of KNemo - the option to use KNemo for monitoring the interfaces is active. What I needed to do to get KNemo start automtically after a new install was to disable and immediately enable this option again.

    Or do I understand you completely wrong and you have a different problem?

    The option for monitoring the interfaces
    was previously active and I was able to see them in the tray. They are no longer there and I cannot access the "Network Monitor" link inside of Control Center. It just blinks every time I click on it. Hence my question...is there a way to reset the Control Center module or manually start the tray icons so that I can access the configuration interface for KNemo?

    please use 'kcmshell kcm_knemo' on the command line. If everything is installed correctly this will open KNemos control center module.

    Ok, that showed me exactly what I was missing (a link to a library). So after manually reinstalling it, I can now access KNemo from the tray and Control Center. Apparently, the emerge package must have broken something. Anyway, thanks for the help. Keep up the great work on KNemo. It's one of the handiest tools I have on my laptop.

    Hmm, this is worth thinking about... where is the option to set the update interval there could be a new option named "Also update tooltips".

    Would you mind filling out a wish at bugs.kde.org for KNemo and this feature?
