Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.7

  • Add a global shortcut to toggle traffic plotters.

  • Find the interface of the default gateway again. (BR 328752)

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

  • Fix translation word puzzles, missing contexts. (BR 329095, BR 329097)

  • Add an include to fix broken compilation when using libnl >= 3.2.26.

  • LicenseGPL

     uptime

It would be nice if teh uptime was directly got from teh machine, rather than a counter for howlong teh service has been running, i paticularly noticed this when i installed 0.1.6 and teh uptime reset.

Also, when i installed 0.1.6 the icons disapeared and it's now just one of those 'no icon' icons...

About the uptime: Where do I get this information? I don't know any way how to get the uptime of an interface from the system.

About the icons: You have to restart KDE to get the new version of KNemo loaded into memory.

Have you checked if the icon is displayed after a KDE restart? If the icon theme you are using doesn't have the needed icons KNemo will automatically load the ones that come with it. I checked this on my own system and it worked.

Please make sure that the icons are installed under $KDEDIR/share/icons/crystalsvg/22x22/actions. Their names are like the names mentioned in the ChangeLog.

ah, i gto confused between system and interface uptime, but it definetly needs sorting (look at the uptime here... ftp://lou.homelinux.org/knemo.png)

maybe a daemon which starts at boot and then knemo get the uptime from there? that way we get an accurate uptime rather than that from KDE logging on and the service starting?

    Hi,

this is a known bug in KNemo 0.1.5 and is fixed in the current release 0.1.6.

About the daemon monitoring the uptime from system start rather than from KDE start: I'm not really in need for such a high precision so there is little chance I will do such a feature myself. Maybe someone else wants to contribute this...

In MDK 10,I found that U must type :
    kcmshell /usr/share/applnk/Settings/Network/kcm_knemo
to start the knemo config page.

"kcmshell kcm_knemo" and config button is no use...

    sorry for my poor English...

    Hi rex,

thanks for your information. There were already some Mandrake users complaining about the missing configuration dialog but I wasn't sure what the problem was.

Hope the solution I provide above works on Mandrake.

    Well done, this is brilliant.

This is one of the few things that I missed from XP.

    Keep up the good work.

That's why it is a monitor and not a dialup tool. ;-)

I think there are already enough tools that provide dial on demand or take care of removing/inserting network cables.

    At first, brilliant tool!

to cooperate knemo with kppp open the config of you ppp0 device and enter this as start command:
    kstart --skiptaskbar kppp -q -c account_name

    and for stop command:
    kppp -k -q

disable "hide icon when not connected"

in kppp set "dock to kicker when connected" to enabled. Now you can start/stop your ppp0 device from knemo systray icon

that's indeed how I use KNemo with my PPP connection.

Thanks for pointing out again, guess this will also be useful for other users.

This could be extended! don't call kppp for start directly. If I had time, I will make a shell script that choose the best accounts by time and date. This would be a great improve of dial up with kppp
