KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

    Ok so here is the problem. I move my laptop from my modem/router at home to another at work.

    Both connect to the Boardband line in the wall.

    Using KNemo and the ifup command I can connect to both routers, it gives me a connected icon, I get a up time count and IP address. BUT I can't look at the net or see the web.

    I used the Gnome app 'netapplet' before this and that would work just fine. Along with 'ifup eth1' in the context menu I've also added 'hwup eth1' (I'm running SuSE 9.2 so hot plugging should do that for me anyway) but had no luck.

    Any ideas? What is netapplet doing that KNemo isn't? I'd prefer to use KNemo.

    I don't know what netapplet is doing but KNemo just monitors your connections. In other words, it is, more or less, a graphical frontend to 'ifconfig'. Whatever output you get from 'ifconfig' KNemo will display it via the icons in the systray.

    That said it is clear, that KNemo does not check (because it can't) if the connections 'ifconfig' displays are working properly or not.

    It seems you are having a problem with your web connection through the routers. There may be a working connection to the routers but that's not always enough.

    Maybe you should recheck with netapplet, if this is still working....

    Ah but you can set up the commands ifup and ifdown.

    netapp does still work and makes the connection. I have now fixed the problem by setting both my wireless card and Ethernet card to "if plugged in" within SuSE Plugger so I can use KNemo. :)


    Only thing is, if my ifup command wasn't working in Knemo or Console what the hell was netapplet doing to make it work. :S

    Love the app, have been looking for something like this for a few years.

    One little niggle about it though.. Can you make it possible to rename the title of the graph windows? So instead of reading "eth0 Traffic" or whatnot, you can put your own information in there, eg: "LAN", "External", "Internet", etc.

    The Alias only shows up when hovering the mouse pointer over the tray icons. When you have the graphs displayed, it always shows the interface name, not the alias. :(

    Ah, sorry. This was a suggestion how I could change KNemo to behave in the future... guess I will put it on my TODO list.

    BTW, there will be no updates to KNemo in the near future as I still have to clear some private things before there is again time to work on KNemo.

    I know it's very strange, but knemo does not follow the cursor theme of X11. I'm using suse9.1 with x.org, and knemo uses the default (root) cursor theme, while the rest of the system (kde,k3b,konqueror,gnome...) use the theme I chose.
    Very strange...

    Bug?

    Hmmm... not sure about this. But KNemo does nothing special about the cursor (e.g. settings a different cursor or the like) and instead is a standard KDE application that uses the standard KDE classes.

    Meaning I don't have a clue why this could happen and would rather check if other programs in the system tray don't show the same behaviour. Or do you use KDE CVS or 3.4 Beta and the problem comes from that direction...?

    I installed KNemo a couple of days ago but have since uninstalled for the following reasons:

    1. KNemo places a 1 - 2% load on the CPU even when no network activity (or activity of any kind) is occurring (i.e., system is idle); this % is not high, but why does KNemo even need this amount? Other similar and more powerful monitors (e.g., GKrellM) do not cause any such load;

    2. KNemo writes 49K to disk every 5 seconds (non-stop) once it is loaded. What is this activity and why is it necessary?

    I installed and uninstalled KNemo several times to assure myself the activity was caused by KNemo. Every time KNemo was installed, the above described behavior ocurred; everytime KNemo was unistalled, the above behavior ceased. Thus, I am positive KNemo is the culprit.

    KNemo was installed from SuSE 9.2 64-bit RPM.

    Hi,

    I also recognized the ralatively high load that KNemo causes. The reason seems to be that KNemo runs the 3 programs ifconfig, iwconfig and route every second. Maybe I should make the poll rate configurable (what I prefer) or I should change KNemo to use /proc instead of the output of these 3 programs.

    The 49k written to disk every 5 seconds I cannot explain. How did you find out and do you know where they get written?

    Firstly, thank you for the reply.

    Now, to the 49K: I was using GKrellM to monitor the disk device containing my root partition. After installing KNemo, the monitor would show a spike in disk activity and indicate a write-size of 49K every 5 seconds (give or take a few milliseconds :)). Since this only identifies the activity and indicates size without any other specifics, I installed SysInternals FileMon for the explicit purpose of tracking down exactly what the disk activity was. But, I could not get FileMon to run without errors, thus I could not report the results. FileMon is tool I use often and successfully under Windows XP, but for some reason I couldn't get the Linux version to work. Probably my fault.

    Anyway, as I said before, the disk activity indicated by GKrellM began after installing KNemo and ceased after uninstalling. I repeated the install / uninstall several times with the same behavior exhibited.

    Again, thank you for replying. I'm more curious than ever about the 49K since you aren't even aware of it. :)

    Guess what?

    When I run ifconfig, iwconfig, and route from Konsole, I get the following results monitoring the root partition with GKrellM:

    ifconfig -> approx. 5 second delay -> then 49K Write

    iwconfig -> approx. 2 second delay -> then 41K Write

    route -> approx. 5 second delay -> then 82K write

    So, it would seem that I was seeing ifconfig running and writing in the background while KNemo was loaded. However, I can't explain exactly what the write is or why I wasn't seeing the 41K and 82K from iwconfig and route, which you say are also running with KNemo.

    So a switch to /proc should be the solution to both problems it seems. Oh well, when I have again time for KNemo development I should consider this for one of the next major versions.

    Thank you for spending your time on KNemo and giving me another reason to switch to /proc. I avoided the switch in the past... because I was too lazy and nearly nobody complained about the 2% load.

    Hi,

    I still don't have KDE 3.4 alpha/beta/RC installed, so I can not be of any help.

    Just one suggestion/idea: did you recompile KNemo after you installed the RC?
