Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.7

  • Add a global shortcut to toggle traffic plotters.

  • Find the interface of the default gateway again. (BR 328752)

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

  • Fix translation word puzzles, missing contexts. (BR 329095, BR 329097)

  • Add an include to fix broken compilation when using libnl >= 3.2.26.

  • LicenseGPL

     Error compiling

    Hi,
I'm trying to compile your program under Mandrake 10.0. I've found a problem due to the file configdlg.h is not found. I've downloaded the source file. Any idea?
    Thanks in advance

Could be that you don't have Qt 3.3 installed. Then the build process won't create the file configdlg.h...

So please make sure Qt 3.3 is installed.

Yes, you are in reason. I just have QT 3.2.3. I do not know if I can upgrade to QT 3.3 because there are not official packages in my distro, Mandrake 10.0
    Thanks in advance

    Workaround:

Open the file kcm/configdlg.ui and change the version in the first line from 3.3 to 3.2.

    This should also work.

Would it be possible to autodetect devices, I think that most unexperienced users do not know that they have to add eth0, tun0 etc.

There is sort of autodetection, maybe it's a bit hidden. But when you open the config dialog for the first time a popup will tell you about it.

When you press 'Defaults' in the config dialog, KNemo will look under '/proc/net/dev' and automatically add all interfaces found there.

     Include in KDE?

Did you ever think about posting knemo
to kde-devel and ask if they would
like to have it included in KDE by
    default.

It's so useful and cool that I cannot
    live without it anymore.

I mainly use it to check my wireless
connection, and to trigger my isdn
    connection (with custom RMB commands)

Hi. First of all, great app. Second, I can't seem to make the icon change while disconnecting (no messagebox either). I'm using now Suse 9.1 (KDE 3.3.1). I've installed it from rpm and even from source with no luck. Before moving to Suse, I've installed on MDK 10 and 10.1 (CE) and there it worked perfectly.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

what exactly do you mean with 'disconnecting'? Unplugging the network cable or disconnect from PPP?

Could you please post the output of 'ifconfig' while online and after you disconnected, so I can maybe see where the problem is.

Hi, First of all thanks for your reply. Second, I don't dial to the internet. I'm getting internet connection directly from my ISP. The only interface I have is the network card interface (eth0) and when I pull the cable out, nothing seems to change (even the ifconfig output doesn't seem to change). Only when I bring down the network service (e.g. /etc/init.d/network stop) the icon is changing to the disconnected one.

    Thanks again.

Ah, ok, I already guessed something like that.

KNemo depends on 'ifconfig', so when there is no change in the output of 'ifconfig' KNemo won't detect any changes.

You need a program that monitors the insertion/removal of the cable and starts or stop the interface appropriately. I use 'ifplugd' on Gentoo and I remember a package 'laptop-net' for Debian.

Try one of these programs and you have the desired effect in KNemo.

    Hi there,

I love your application ever since you released it. I was wondering when the next release will be available?

Will there be a homepage (sourceforge project)? There are surely people who would love to provide some patches (don't count on me, I can't code) :-))

What about switching the app to use /sys? Would this be even doable/reasonable/"make sense at all"?

Anyways, keep up the good work!

    Greetings,

    Martin

    Hi Martin,

    great you like KNemo!

    To answer your questions:
    - there is no homepage and there are no plans from my side to build one. There is only a limited amount of time I want to spend on KNemo...
    - this is also the reason there have been no updates to KNemo in the last time. Other things were more important but maybe I'll use the Christmas Holidays to continue working on KNemo
    - the main reason I didn't change to /sys or /proc is that 'ifconfig' seems to work good enough for most people, only on slower machines it seems to put a bit too much load on the CPU

So don't expect an update this year but I have good news, a guy from Canada is working on the statistics/logging for KNemo and will send me a patch when he finished coding.
