Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.7

  • Add a global shortcut to toggle traffic plotters.

  • Find the interface of the default gateway again. (BR 328752)

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

  • Fix translation word puzzles, missing contexts. (BR 329095, BR 329097)

  • Add an include to fix broken compilation when using libnl >= 3.2.26.

  • LicenseGPL

     Why not part of KDE?

I really like this little tool! Why is it not part of the KDE release? I mean have a look at the votes, this should really be part of the KDE release!

Should one file a wishlist item at bugs.kde.org in order to get this in, or do you not want this to be part of KDE?

There was already some discussion going into that direction and I agreed to put KNemo into KDE Network but then there was a reply from a guy from KDE stating something like:

'Was this already discussed on the KDE mailing lists?'

and from that point I didn't hear anything from the KDE guys.

So maybe there needs to be some discussion from KDE side but I am not involved in it and don't want to be involved in it.

If they want KNemo in CVS it's fine with me and I will maintain it there or it will stay here which is also fine for me.

     accounting tool?

Can we imagine to add some accounting features to this tool? I mean that it would save the traffic info regularly and then give the following info: last month, this month, ...

PS: Congratulations for this useful tool!

Accounting and statistics (as found in du-meter for example) is on my TODO list but don't expect it in the near future.

At the moment KNemo development has paused for a while.

Tried sooooo many applets looking for something like this. This should no doubt be integrated into kde. By far the best applet of it's type I have seen...very nice on a laptop with wireless!

     Suggestion

I suggest that you add a little menu in the icon which will launch or stop a connection. The user will have to configure the command to execute to start/stop the connection.
For example, I have a speedtouch dsl modem. If I want to connect I have to open the console and type speedtouch-start or speedtouch-stop ( or sometimes modem_run -k -f /usr/share/speedtouch/firmware.bin && pppd call dsl0 ), it's not easy for my sister, so this would be nice.

    Hmmm,

either I don't understand your suggestion or you are using an older version of KNemo. Or you didn't yet find the feature.

But the thing you are asking for is already implemented. Just open the config dialog for KNemo and on the 'Interfaces' tab activate the option 'Display custom entries in context menu'.

And certainly make sure you are using the latest version of KNemo! :-)

    Great job dude!
I really love your app! It is really the only thing I was missing in KDE! It should be included in standard packages!
You could add just one feature to your app: it should report to the user a command in customized menu that has failed to run, and it should report the exiting code as well.
Apart this I think KNemo is one of the best programs I've ever seen!

Maybe the Christmas holidays will put me in the right mood to do some work on KNemo again...
