KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

    'make' errors and wont compile in Mandrake 10.0. This is the output I get:

    Please upgrade to Qt 3.3 or edit both ui-files (in folder kcm and knemod) and change the version in line 1 from '3.3' to '3.2'.

    make the signal plotter a little bit nicer:
    -include an option: "show as line" - like the signal plotter in kppp
    -another option: "show up/down speed" in the bottom right (those numbers shown in tooltip)

    add a button for context menu entries presets. I mean it would be great if newbies could select entries for kppp, network start/stop/restart,.... I think that isn't much work, because you can "hard code" the entries. If you need some ideas for presets, I can post some...

    Try to change the resizeMode of the listview (dyn. context entry list) to AllColumns - this could look nicer as it is now.

    I put them on the TODO list but with real low priority.

    Are you interessted to include knemo into kde(network)? I think it would be great! You can release standalone versions like it kopete does.

    Not yet. I want to get KNemo somewhere near 1.0 (meaning most features are included) and then it would be ok for me to commit to CVS.

    I think it is a long way to KDE 4.0 so there should be enough time for this.

    as emerge say: knemo is masked bey keyword. That means knemo is in the testing (aka unstable) tree of portage. You had some choices to install it:

    1) ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge knemo
    (if your arch is x86, BTW this method had some risks -> ask @ formums.gentoo.org)

    2) change your stable system into a testing system via a var in make.conf (see docs or ask in the gentoo forum)

    3) enter in /etc/portage/package.keywords knemo as testing package. Then the system excepts knemo as testing in a stable system

    for mor info read the docs of the new functions of portage 2.50

    Would it not be better to use the information in /proc/net instead of starting ifconfig every second?
    It is a big strain on slower hardware.

    I must admit, this is true.

    2 things that keep me from changing to /proc/net

    * there were not many people complaining about 'ifconfig' and it seems it works fine (in the sense of detecting all information without problems) for most users

    * it seems that /proc/net does not deliver as many information as 'ifconfig' (for example I didn't find the number of transfered bytes) and the information is spread all around the directory while 'ifconfig' delivers it all at once

    bytes and packets transferred are in /proc/net/dev in the form of 1 line / device
    there is a speed inpact since every time you update the info at minimum 2 programs are started if wireless tools are installed even 3 programs.

    Hmmm, well ok. So there is only one point (#1) remaining of my 2 reasons.

    Maybe it would make sense to import KNemo into KDE CVS soon. Then others would have the chance to make such changes.

    Lets see if I am ready to give up control of KNemo now.
