Description:

KNemo - the KDE Network Monitor

A detailed review of the KNemo 0.4.7 can be found at Softpedia:
http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/linux/KNemo-Review-53310.shtml

KNemo offers a network monitor similar to the one found in Windows. For every network interface it displays an icon in the systray. It can also optionally montor traffic statistics.

Changelog:

Version 0.7.7

  • Add a global shortcut to toggle traffic plotters.

  • Find the interface of the default gateway again. (BR 328752)

  • Log statistics to the correct time if we're resuming from suspend. (BR 332086)

  • Fix translation word puzzles, missing contexts. (BR 329095, BR 329097)

  • Add an include to fix broken compilation when using libnl >= 3.2.26.

  • LicenseGPL

     Feature request

by oshogg on: Aug 29 2004

    Hi,

I use both wired and wireless connections of my laptop. I use one or the other depending on whether I am at home, work, school or somewhere else. I would like to quickly look at the system tray and figure out which connection exists.

I like to only show the icons in the system tray when the connection is established (to save system tray space). I would like to assign different colors of icons for different wired/wireless etc. connections. This would be very helpful to me to quickly find out what interfaces are up.

    Is this possible right now?

    thanks,
    Osho

    Hi,

yes this is possible. Since 0.2.3 you can assign different icon sets to each interface to distinguish between different types of interfaces (WLAN, LAN and Dialup). If you select the option "Hide icon when not connected" you will only see the icon in the system tray when the interface is actually connected, otherwise it will be hidden.

All you need additionally is a program like 'ifplugd' or 'laptop-net' that will connect and disconnect the interface whenever you plug or unplug the cable from your notebook. This is how I use KNemo and it works perfectly.

Please remember that KNemo cannot do the connection and disconnection stuff as it is only a monitor. There are no plans to change this in the future.

    Thanks much h.c.

Choosing different icons work very well (even though the wireless icons could be better - but that is not a big issue).

    Thanks!

It was perfectly alright with 0.2.2

    Hi Anil,

I have some similar reports from other Gentoo users that upgraded their 'net-tools' package to version 1.60-r9 (not 100% sure about that) and since then 'ifconfig' (on which KNemo relies) doesn't show the transfered data anymore.

Downgrading to 1.60-r8 solved the problem for at least one Gentoo user.

You might want to try this.

But in any case please make sure that 'ifconfig' stills reports the amount of transfered data. If it doesn't work, KNemo won't work either.

great that you got the algoritm for publishing knemo 0.2.3 at 23:23 :-)

Are the dynamic context entries on your todo list?

I saw some untranslated strings in the german translation, will you fix it, or should I look what I can do ;-)

BTW: I use net-tools 1.60-r7 and there are no problems

Oh yes, they are. I even started coding on them... lets see what the weekend will bring.

Keep them for a friend of mine. He's mentioned as the German translator in the 'About'-dialog, so let him do the work. ;-)

    > BTW: I use net-tools 1.60-r7 and there are no problems

Just checked, I have 1.60-r8 with no problem.

    read the description above!

the word "IMPORTANT" means that are important informations :-)

"IMPORTANT: KNemo is not an executable but an KDED service. Therefore
it has to be started using Control Center/KDE Components/Service
    Manager."

Somtimes you have to restart kde after you activate it in the Control Center.

    1) the app icon in your about dialog look ugly ;-)

    2) I have 2 idea to avoid those problems with ifconfig

    a) you can include the neccessary code from ifconfig in knemo. Then you can solve the overflow problem and it is more easier to grab the information.

    b) make a stand alone version of ifconfig and modify it as you need (xml output, overflow correction,....)

I must admit, I failed to change it. I spent some time looking into the code of this but it seems that the 'About'-dialog is meant for applications and not for daemons. Which means the dialog guesses the icon from some application settings that are not available for a daemon.

    Any hint is appreciated.

    2) I have 2 idea to avoid those problems with ifconfig

Sure, if 1.0 is released and there is nothing else left to improve or fix I would try this suicide commando. Low level kernel hacking in KDE. ;-)

I already took a look into the code of 'ifconfig' before and found some kernel calls. Then I thought 'No, you don't want to take care of which kernel version every user has installed.'.

As Linus once said: 'Show me the source!', I say 'Show me the patch!' ;-)

If I code the about dialog manually I also had the problem with the icon. but I did not know anything to fix it. Only the about box in the standard menu is easy.

What about contributing one? If you have a good idea how the icons could look like, open your prefered icon editor and do some copy&paste.

I would be happy to add them to KNemo.
