Description:

Kexi is a visual database app builder. It can be used for designing database applications, inserting and editing data, performing queries, and processing data. Forms can be created to provide a custom interface to your data. All database objects – tables, queries, forms, reports – are stored in the database, making it easy to share data and design.

Kexi is considered as a long awaited Open Source competitor for Microsoft Access, FileMaker and Oracle Forms. Its development is motivated by the lack of Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools for database systems that are sufficiently powerful, inexpensive, open standards driven and portable across many operating systems and hardware platforms.

Kexi designed to work well not only on KDE but also on GNOME and other environments. It should be usable also without running KDE Desktop on Linux/Unix, MS Windows and Mac OS X platforms (support for the latter two is planned to be re-added).

KEXI TEAM IS LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK, DEVELOPERS, TESTERS, AND SUPPORT

Request new features or fixes for Kexi at https://www.bountysource.com/teams/kexi

-----------------------------------------------

Note: Versions 1.0-2.3 and have been released within KOffice, 2.4 and next versions are a part of the Calligra suite, successor of KOffice. Users are not forced to install all the Calligra packages to use Kexi.

Documentation should be available with the Linux Kexi package. If this is not the case in your distribution, the newest documentation is at http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook

I saw that the new OpenOffice.org (still test version 2.0) has a so called OpenOffice.org Base, this can replace MSAccess forever.

Only if OO.org Base will be more stable. For now it's like a mockup of an application. And try to use it, then tell me if you like Java-based database (HSQL DB) used by OO.org Base?

It's all not about complete replace an app by another, what is impossible for many MS-technology-hostages. It's all about a choice, more choice, better choice...

Kexi has a lot more front than Knoda I liked a lot of its ideas and layout but at this stage of development it dosen't deliver unlike the rock solid Knoda it isn't anywhere near useable.

I tried running kexi shortly after installing the rpm from pbone and got this message:

kexi: error while loading shared libraries: libkdeinit_kexi.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Im using Suse 9.3 Pro which didnt come with the koffice database module so i got version 1.3.91-3, while other modules are version 1.3.5-11.

Try to get/request well prepared binaries from your distro maker.

 kexi crashes

by RND on: May 9 2005

Score 50%

Ok, managed to get it installed but just found a crash:

1. open kexi
2. blank project, click ok
3. select new project stored in file, then click create (shouldnt that be greyed out at this stage?).
4. it then crashes.

It works ok using next. So maybe grey out create early on.

Fixed before releasing (Tue April 19 23:39:15):

http://tinyurl.com/d8e67

So in newer packages you will have it fixed too.

> Can it work with mdb database from MS Access?

You should be able to migrate an MDB database into kexi using the Tools->Migration menu option.

You'll need the keximdb driver which isn't distributed as part of kexi itself, but may be packaged for your distro.

See http://www.kexi-project.org/wiki/wiki/?MDBDriver
for more info, or get the source from
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/apps/KDE3.x/database/
