Description:

Kexi is a visual database app builder. It can be used for designing database applications, inserting and editing data, performing queries, and processing data. Forms can be created to provide a custom interface to your data. All database objects – tables, queries, forms, reports – are stored in the database, making it easy to share data and design.

Kexi is considered as a long awaited Open Source competitor for Microsoft Access, FileMaker and Oracle Forms. Its development is motivated by the lack of Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools for database systems that are sufficiently powerful, inexpensive, open standards driven and portable across many operating systems and hardware platforms.

Kexi designed to work well not only on KDE but also on GNOME and other environments. It should be usable also without running KDE Desktop on Linux/Unix, MS Windows and Mac OS X platforms (support for the latter two is planned to be re-added).

KEXI TEAM IS LOOKING FOR FEEDBACK, DEVELOPERS, TESTERS, AND SUPPORT

Request new features or fixes for Kexi at https://www.bountysource.com/teams/kexi

-----------------------------------------------

Note: Versions 1.0-2.3 and have been released within KOffice, 2.4 and next versions are a part of the Calligra suite, successor of KOffice. Users are not forced to install all the Calligra packages to use Kexi.

Documentation should be available with the Linux Kexi package. If this is not the case in your distribution, the newest documentation is at http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook

 Where is docs?

by Bleim on: Aug 10 2005

Score 38%

I want to use kexi to make a small database application, but I don't know how to do some things, so I need some DOCS or how-to's, but I don't find anything.

I.e. how to do an app for a user, without kexi interface.

Another thing is scripts.

But I have to say I have good vibrations with kexi.

There's a translation project for the docs to english. Somebody is doing that, so keep checking Kexi Project web site.

There's no "final mode for users" functionality with editing blocked in Kexi. It's is planned after 1.0.
As a temporary solution I could recommend: to prevent creating and modifying tables by user you can alter permissions for creating and/altering tables using your database administration tool (eg. pg Admin or mysql Administrator).

Update:
Translating Kexi Handbook to english is still in progress, a part of it can be found on the official KDE documentation web site:

 Upgrade no go

Hi,
have upgraded from .8 which was part of a SuSE 10 install. I then downloaded the rpm from the link and installed the newer version. However kexi will not start ... any ideas.

Try to run 'kexi' command in the command line and see what are the messages.
Also provide exact name of your rpm file.

OK, I retraced my steps to .8, however, I noticed an updated rpm on the 11/04, so downloaded a i586 base rpm for SuSE 10, and installed. Kexi still loading as .8
and I cannot find any reference under YAST for Kexi, just the KOffice base package. Kexi at the prompt does not produce errors, just the wrong version running. I would like to operate using MySQL on my server, also SuSE v9 I think from memory.
Sorry this is all a bit garbled

I cannot be sure what rpm have you got installed. I guess you have not compiled Kexi from the source code?
From the command line try

rpm -qa | grep kexi

and then

rpm -e kexipackagename

Or maybe your 0.8 package is named koffice-database?
To find out what version do you have, try:

rpm -qa | grep koffice-database

 Ark packages updated

by beroarklinux on: Jul 14 2006

Score 50%

We've just updated the Ark packages to 1.0.2. (tagged 1.5.2 to follow koffice version numbering though).

Ark Linux users simply apt-get install kexi (and maybe kexi-MySQL and/or kexi-PostgreSQL and/or kexi-msaccess); others in need of RPMs can try

http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/SRPMS/koffice-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm
http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm
http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-MySQL-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm
http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-PostgreSQL-1.5.2-1ark.src.rpm
http://arklinux.osuosl.org/dockyard-devel/i586/kexi-msaccess-1.0.2-1ark.src.rpm
