Name[de]=Als root bearbeiten

Greetings Seraphyn

ps:
Sometimes there would be Users, who want to manage their Linux in this way.
To Accept that Linux is an Operating System which is build up by the Users himself in their own way,
is one of the substructures from Linux and this is the difference between some Operating Systems.
It's Cool that You care about each other, but do it in a Way that would be better than this.
Post a HowTo on a Website and tell the Link to each other here, this will be a choice for people who are interested in your type of version and could make some Installations more Secure as they are.

Just my 2 Cent

 A Great Idea

What a great idea! This makes editing all the configuration files so easy. You don't have to start a root shell and run vi, or a root konqueror to run kate, you just right click it. Dare I say, as easy as some other operating systems. I don't know if this is a major security risk or not, but it fixes one of the major headaches of having a Linux desktop system. On a server it's OK to require special security procedures to edit files. But, on my desktop, I want to edit things now. On my desktop all of those configuration files belong to me. I want to try something out and then edit it again to try something different. It has been too painful to do until this little service menu.

Well, this is a special procedure. Yet, it must not be an automatic procedure and it must not put your root passwrd or your system config files in danger.
And no, since we are all on the same network, the security of your config files is important to me. Right now i receive every day 10 emails with my email adress on it which have been rejected by some mail server because some person who know me has his computer infected by a virus which sends emails with his adressbook's adresses.
If we all together make crappy security, it wont be long before the situation under linux ressembles that of crappier OSes.

 What about...

What about doing a check if you have the needed privileges to "Read", "Edit" or "Execute" on a (any) file. If you do not have the privileges to do a certain action, a dialog could pop-up asking you to supply a (root) password so you can continue with the action you selected.

For "Edit" this dialog could also pop-up once you save your changes to that file.

Would be nice, to put KDE on par with other OSes. I hope this is part of KDE 4.

 Using "Run command"

by wilburpan on: Apr 18 2004

What's wrong with using the "Run command" KMenu option and doing "kdesu kedit" or "kdesu kedit filename"? It (1) keeps your password safe, as you have to enter the root password, (2) you can just as easily navigate your filesystem with the Open File dialog in whatever editor you care to use, and (3) if you do it once, it saves the command in the drop down menu for ease of use later on. In my case, my "Run command" drop down menu has "kdesu kedit", "kdesu kedit /etc/make.conf", "kdesu kedit /etc/rc.conf", and "kdesu kedit /boot/grub/grub.conf" in it. (I run a Gentoo system, and these are configuration files that I am often editing.)

There is a lot wrong with it. First, if you are editing a file somewhere deep in the filesystem and you don't have the path memorized, you have to copy and paste it. Second, 90% of KDE users don't know that kdesu exists. Third, it is odd to enter commands in a GUI. Forth, "run command" is more for doing odd one-time proceedures, not routine tasks. Fifth, your logic could be used to say that you don't even need "Run Command..." after all, you could just open a Konsole.

 open as root

This last weeks, we seen on kde-look.org differents kde actions like "run as root","edit as root", "print openoffice document"...Myself I'm using several of his actions in my kde menu and I find them very useful, "indispensables". But I think all these actions have to be concentrate. For example, I think "run and edit as root" could be the same action if in the script you made you could identify if it is a program or a file and so call the right action with kdesu. Perrahps you could work with the man who did execute as root? Or for "print openoffice document", why not use a simply Print this action? print appears in action document for all text files or kdetext file but openoffice. It will be better to obtain print action appears for openoofice files too than add more action? I think after multi action choice step, there will be synthetic action choice.

 php files?

by amykhar on: Apr 18 2004

I have been trying to figure out how to get this addon to allow me to edit .php files as root.

I tinkered with the control center and adding .php to the text section, but it didn't seem to work.

Can it be done, and if so, how?

never mind. With a bit of help from google, I figured it out.

simply add ,application/x-php after text/* and all is well.
