 Hmmm...

Linux is awesome, it's great, it's secure, it's stable...it's a much better OS than Window$. But, I don't feel that will last for long if people continue to implement insecure practises, such as "open as root", "run as root", etc. Are these "...as root" really needed? Have we become that lazy? If we continue to do things the "fast and convenient" way, we may forget how to do certain things the "correct" way. Laziness was the fownfall of Microsoft, I do hope it won't be the same for Linux.

Anyone who does not agree should keep in mind that this is being posted in the interests of Free Speech and is just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you.

I'm not sure why this is so bad sometimes you are logged in as a normal user and you need to edit some file in /etc what would be the difference between this and firing up konsole logging in a superuser and editing via VI or Emacs. this tool asks for a password before u can run as root. Whats the difference between this and using kuser or going into kcontrol and using the system administration settings both of which ask you for root password.

To be honest, I do not really get your problem with that kind of tool.
It is not any more insecure than using konsole and login as root using "su" and afterwards launching vi but far more convenient.
Could you explain a bit why you don't like ist?

Thilo

How would you recommend editing /etc/fstab?
Or any of the many config files found under /etc? How would you recommend installing anything if I don't use sudo or su? How can I completely compile and install a new kernel without using sudo (as root)?

Have you gotten enough sleep last night?

BTW, I really like this "service". Thanks.

 Explanation...

There is no way for a normal user to become "root" on my system - my system does not have the sudo/su commands. Nor is there any way for a normal user to travers or view files/directories outside their home directory. Logging in as root requires a username, password AND PIN - the password and PIN are kept seperate by two different individuals. This is because, in normal Linux distros, the superuser password can be piped/spoofed from any other computer connected to the network, or the internet, when the password is entered. One just needs to know what to look and listen for - I thought everyone knew how to do this. Linux is already too easy to hack and "conveniences" make it even easier. One should not be allowed to login to the root account while any connected system or device is connected to any untrusted system.

I may be paranoid, but I'll never be hacked.

Wow...can't see a good reason to have the password and PIN kept separate here at home since my dog wouldn't know the first thing to do with a PIN. My question is, why have an OS that you can't use. Getting hacked has nothing to do with having sudo or su available must bad vulns in the past (and now) give users root access so su had nothing to do with it. Besides, why doen't you just rename sudo and su to some other arbitrary name like I do. This way you have access to sudo and su but noone else will know what app to run, they see there is no su or sudo so they don't try.

But as I always say in French, "Who fucking cares". Live your life how you choose, but don't reflect your ingnorance onto others.

Peace.

 Open as... / With...

Hello,

Personnaly I've just done it with another way :

In Konqueror file associations, I've added an app that can open all files (or just texts, if you want) :

Name : "KWrite (administrator)"
Command : "kdesu kwrite"
Icon : "kedit" (the same as KWrite, but red :-) )

And for folders, I've added a Open with command :

Name : "Konqueror (administrator)"
Command : "kdesu konqueror"
Icon : "kfm" (not found : perhapse folder_red much more expressive)

I prefere this way because "Edit as..." is quite the same as "Open with..."
And we can opens files / folders in a lot of apps :-) [kfm, konqueror, for folders ; kwrite, emacs for text files...]

It's much more praticall than open a konsole ! Cool.

My two cents...

I wish services like these were part of the KDE base. Perhaps in a seperate menu, called "root commands" or something.

I would absolutely second this. A category for this in the Actions submenu would make sense to me (I was actually just flipping through the messages here before posting something akin to what is written above before doing it myself ;) ). Without separating the Actions menu into sections, it will very easily become very cluttered... And these sections would best be thought out by, say, the KDE Usability group :)
