Description:

I know there are a gazillion ideas out there about how the main menu should look.

I hope you can stand one more.

My concept while not complete, deals with ease of use and mouse/keyboard interaction.

In my opinion one of the easiest interfaces is that of my cell phone, why do I say easy?, because once used a few times I can easily navigate through the screens usually without looking at them.

After the initial click on the central big icon (distro customized) the menu expands to reveal a larger panel where the icons are laid out in a 9x9 grid arrangement to correspond to the number pad keys.

This way you can dial right to you desired application.

As an example in the included image, you would click the menu icon, then sequentially type 5,1 to start kaffine.

Also this design also allows you to find an application by searching first without navigating through the full menu.

As another example suppose you don't know the name of your application but you know the function.

In the search box you\'d type dv.. and as you type the menu would sort through all the programs that are associated with "dv" and give you choices.

There is a navigation button that allows you to go back ala kickoff style that is hopefully more obvious.

Also displayed is an icon for contextual help.

The control panel at the side operates in the same manner as other plasmoids.

The configuration icon would bring up a separate app that would allow you to customize the panel layouts.

Again not all of the details have been worked out so if you recognize a design flaw please communicate it.

Changelog:

I like the idea. But i think it might be more suitable to use this kind of main menu on small devices tat are used to such a menu. You see, pressing menu icons with your fingers/stylo isn't the same as doing that on 17/19/25" monitor with a mouse.
But since KDE4 is known to be ported to some handhelds ad even Noia smartphones, the developers might be really interested in this design. Maybe it could replace kickoff or at leat compete with it on such devices.

I never said anything about using your finger of stylus. I descibed using the mouse/keyboard in combination for faster navigation.

The menu can be resized and configured to the users personal tastes.
But you do make an interesting obsrervation. The design could be carried over to mobile devices creating a consistant ui amoung devices.

This looks pretty cool, would make a nice plasmoid if you ask me, moreso than being opened though the "K" button.

Now just to find some free time and information on reading the KMenu config :P

Interesting stuff :)
What if you have more than 9 categories or applications? What's your solution for that?
Thanks.

I've actually thought about that :)

If you'll notice on the first main panel, most of the icons that are displayed are for similar categories of applications, but I realize that there may be too few or dissimilar types of applications that need a home. So there is a general icon for "programs" that would navigate to a second panel with another grid of icons for those wayward programs. I hope that answers your question :)

I realized right away that there had to be a compromise to the number of categories that were privileged otherwise I could have ended up with 15-20 groups.

Also remember that it is intended user customizable and task oriented so for example if you do more developing than anything else you would be able to arrange your panel to reflect that.

I kinda like it.
It's very simple and clean.
You could let Texstar try it out for .95 alpha. It fits well with hotrod distros like PCLOS or Sidux. Not so much for Fedora or Kubuntu.
