Description:

Wikiwall is a bash script which will set the "picture of the day"
(POTD) from en.wikipedia.org as your KDE desktop wallpaper.
If you set it to autostart it will give you a new fresh background
as you login in, on a daily basis.
The wallpaper pictures are saved in the /tmp directory, a history of one
week back in time is kept. The script does some basic checking
if wikipedia is reachable and if the wallpaper already is the current one.

Feedback is always welcome, so post a comment or vote if you have an opinion about wikiwall. ;)

There's a service already in commons:

 another site

hey, is it possible to extend this script for other websites, especially Kde-looks.

If it can extract newest/highly-rated/most-downloaded wallpapers automatically and set it as background on daily basis, it would be great.

The wiki site what this script uses doesn't seem to have high-resolution pics and it doesnt look good if set as wallpaper.

Please consider the kde-looks option.

Thanks!

Owning computers nowadays is a bit like having a pet rabbit,
It needs to be fed with right stuff or it gets sick.

Try Firefox [http://www.mozilla.com/firefox] --- the right stuff!

Thank you for your comment. Yeah, it seams feasible to do something similar for kde-look.org. I will start looking into that in the next couple of days.

Since wikiwall is just an ugly hack (though it works!), the one for kde-look.org will probably be more or less a new script.

Regarding your comment about low resolutions on the POTD's from wikipedia:
I really have not seen that as a problem, since a majority of the pictures nominated seem to have a resolution larger than (or at least close to) 1600x1200, which should satisfy most screens.

To you using wikiwall: please continue reporting problems or wishes regarding new functionality! (And yeah I will correct the spelling/bad grammar in the next release. ;) )

Cheers!

 sh or bash?

by Dorgendubal on: Sep 2 2007

The file is defined as shell script (!/bin/sh) but cannot be executed as is. The script fails on the declaration of arrays SITE[1] and SITE[2] (tested with Kubuntu Feisty). I changed the declaration to make it a bourne shell script (!/bin/bash). It worked then perfectly.

Nice script!

Prompt support! Thx

I found another small bug related to "--set-auto". It only works when script is called with full path like:
/home/user/bin/wikiwall --set-auto

When called from directory itself, the link will point to itself
./wikiwall --set-auto
bash wikiwall --set-auto

I didn't find any solution for it. Maybe just notify the user with a warning if $0 starts with '/'.
