Kmail: Try next SMTP server, if Default does Fail!

Description:

Hello!

I am mmoving between several networks with my laptop. At different networks there are different SMTP servers, some networks has restricted to access to some SMTP out of their network.

I am using Kmail as my mail client, and always I try to send the email with the default SMTP, and then I must choose between 4 SMTP servers which I want to use to send mail.

What do you think, should be there an option, which allows Kmail use the next SMTP server from it\'s list if the previous will fail?

I found closed wish in kmail bugs, and Kmail developers will not be friendly to implement such feature, because of security hole.

Could it be huge security hole, if i trun this on with the knowledge of all of risks it can bring?

What do you think about such feature? I don\'t think that there are a few people which are often in different networks, and always keep in mind that they must choose a different SMTP server.

have the very same problem.

i would suggest to detach the SMTP servers conf from the mail client all together.

a separate application, that docks in the system tray and that allows to switch the smtp server easily and quickly at a mouse click.

and this application gets its default from the network config profile that i loaded at boot.

that would be nice.

 Possible Workarround

Yes, I remember the KMail developers were very unfriendly on that issue.

A workarround would be to create a script that change the KMail configuration according to the current network!

With kdcop, I found out that KMail has a function to force it to re-read its configuration file.
It's "dcop kmail MainApplication-Interface reparseConfiguration".

So, when starting the KDE session, a script could be automatically runned, detect what is the network in use and then update the file ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc to use the right SMTP server in the list. Then it call the DCOP function to tell KMail the config file has changed.

To detect the current network... well... do it automatically (based on IP address?) or based on a calendar (during week, it's that SMTP to use, during week-end that other).

But the better way would be for KMail developers to explain what it's so harmful, prevent the user of that BUT allow him to use every SMTP servers if she wish. User should be in control.
