Sonorous User Interface

Description:

As me, you surely find sounds on a desktop computer are pretty toys but absolutly useless. But you sound card is a user interface as your screen. Your sound can be used to send usefull information to user. I see in many articles some ways to avoid popup dialog boxes. Use of a good sound interface is one way. A little sound to remain your appointement or to inform you you have a new mail, is better than a dialog box. To do a good SUD (Sonorous User Interface), sounds have not be considerated as toys. Sound have to be used only for eventd I cannot see on my screen (I don't want to have information two time, else it make me angry).

Currently, all these features exist. But, an unified interface defaults. Somewhere where I can configure all, something which stop automaticly my music when I ask to Ktts to read my new mails... and which stop Ktts when I receive a call on my soft phone.

We have to think now to an unified architecture allowing to all these services to communicate and to make use of voice services sexy.

 sometimes

Score 50%

1. Sometimes I don't turn my speakers on, and you know what could happen then :P

2. Two (or three) years ago, I was using a Lxm Z11 printer (on Windows) and I hated when computer was informing me via speakers "printing started...", "printing job is done...". It was extremley annoying when sound level was a bit high :P

3. In some cases it would be usefull and nice but I don't know how to avoid scarying me when I've stopped playing music (loud) and didn't turned down volume.

PLD rulez :D

1. i'm sorry but this argument is like "what's use of a popup if i forget to turn my monitor on".

2. if i understand well, you'd be able to configure which sounds you want, and which you don't.

3. this one is very right. it'd be a really great idea to connect events to sounds, and to volumes. perhaps default vs a given loudness would do.
i shall upload this idea and we'll see what people think about it. stay tuned ;)

No, it's not. One good reason for turning down the volume is to have a conversation. Often the most easy way to eliminate the sound is by turning the volume knob. (think about it, try to mute xmms by finding the xmms-window etc.. and compare this to the buttons on your speakers)

And what would you do with asynchronous messages? I could have left my desk for a few minutes to get me a cup of coffee and in the meantime I miss several events if they only make a sound. Sound is only for synchronous communication. (and repeating sounds annoy the colleagues!)

i think we're understanding this idea in different ways. my way does not exclude the possibility of
1. having a sound and a visual notification. even if jezz doesn't like the idea, i don't think he said it should be forbidden.
2. actually not using it at all.
besides, one can always fantasize about having an auto-away mode switching from sound-only to visual-only and showing all the pop-ups from the auto-away delay time.

it seemed to me like all he wanted was to have all the configuration in one place...

 Ambivilent

I find myself rather ambivilent on this. I personally doubt I would use most of the sound functionality, as I have media files and that is usually about all the sound I personally want. But I can see how some people like audio clues for things, like beeps for e-mail, or a new line in an IRC channel, or whatever.

I think this idea is better expounded to customizing ALL notifications into customized popups, sounds, or what have you. This way, people like my can have only visual popups with no annoying beep for getting a new e-mail, flashing application icon in the task viewer when I get a new IRC message in a channel, but you can have sounds for everything. Making this an option for all notifications would be far better than limiting the idea to a general sound panel.

 Conceptual

There are no real idea in my message. I just say "Concept of GUI is well developped but not concept of SUI".

I don't talk only about notifications, but all sound system. Some of you prefer to turning the volume knob than mute software mixer. Not logical, no? When you have a conversation, background music have to been mute and only impportant notification have to be played.

In some years, soft phones will generalized. Problem will be more complex. We need to have a solid architecture to support them correctly.

Well, for more than notifications, I think sound is just great on linux, and Windows. I see no need for generalized more settings for things. I have a fancy keyboard with volume and things built in, I use those, never touch the volume on my speakers.

You have just convinced me that I personally have no need or desire for a more developed SUI, becaus eI simply can't picture the need for it, nor can I picture how it would conceivably be any more useful than vloume controls within each sound making application. You have lost me, but I will give you another shot at examples or general cases, how it would be done, what could be configured and all that before I vote against.
