A new kind of sidebar

Description:

This is a suggestion on how to change the appearance of the sidebar. The current version of the sidebar invades on the space of the main konqueror window. My suggestion is to keep main window the same and instead slide out the sidebar to the left.

Screenshot 1: Current version
Screenshot 2: Suggestion

This is more or less standard in MacOSX (as fasr as I now) and from a usability perspective this should be good. The main thing is the non-changing-in-size-window of konqueror, it's better to display the sidebar outside of konqueror instead of changing the browser window size. Shiira is one browser for MacOSX that uses this approach, http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/screenshot/en#SidebarRevision
(Shiira is also based on Khtml/webcore;-)

The sources (xcf) is availible, just hit the download link.

Not the drawers... Those things are uniquely hated by just about everybody i've spoken with about it... They get in the way, they're outside of the window so you can't use them to resize, they're unsquare so they leave space unusable... In short - please no...

Right: What comes to my mind here is that the toplevel-item "Bookmarks" also does not look good as "bookmarks" is already mentioned so in the sidebar panel.

No. If one needs more space one can simply enlarge the window. Also one can simply change the width of the sidebar and/or toggle it on and off with the F9 key.
Bad suggestion I think.

I like it, even though Apple doesn't seem to like it anymore (imo they are simply wrong :) ).

But I feel, that it has the disadvantage of being not as versatile as an inline sidebar.

While the standard sidebar can carry any content without looking out of place, a drawer with, for example, the Kontact-Sidebar (Icons) would imo look strange.

 Should be optional

If this gets implemented it should be optional, not hardwired... Some people might like it, and I suppose it might have a few advantages, but I could see it getting very annoying in a lot of cases.

it might be usefull, but then only if it moves INSIDE the window... overlaying the current content, only there temporarily...

that's why i said show it inside the window, or just DONT do it. this is the main reason mac OS X dumped it.
