Description:

A light colored wallpaper with the KDE gear logo at the right side. The soft, faded gears in the middle and on the right don't distract too much, letting the user concentrate on his own work. I appreciate feedback, especially on the color scheme and the visual layout.

In the archive are also a more saturated blue version and a pearloid (Mother of Pearl) version of this wallpaper, it has a subtle purple and green shade.

Changelog:

6 January 2005, 15:14 GMT+0100:
- Finishing touches to object order, fixes shadow gears on top of branding text.

5 January 2005, 21:04 GMT+0100:
- Updated the SVG for rendering by the KSVG Icon renderer, now it looks like intended on my KDE 3.4 desktop.

As the author of the piece I can't say more than what I intended and how it may have or have not affected the design, please keep this in mind:

I set out to create a non-intrusive background using two subtle shades of blueish gray, the more saturated version in the download has the colors I originally envisioned (for CRT use), the paler one is a bit more suitable on an LCD/TFT screen which has a higher color saturation.

The faded KDE gear is slightly out of focus so it doesn't have sharp edges which distract from the work you want to do. The logo on the right however, is as sharp as possible to make it look professional and fully intended, since we need to brand the desktop -Windows XP does this on it's technical wallpapers, too-.

So, it's not particularly flashy or exciting, but it's damn usable and in my opinion the branding looks professional, corporate and/or businesslike.

As, well, me, all I can say is that it fits. It's elegant, and just appeals to me. Plus it fits in nicely with my translucent kicker, too.

Compared to most other submissions I think it's definitely one of the best.

I have one minor problem - the notches out of the white faded gears where you've copied them from the KDE logo - but, hey, I don't really notice it, and I think that might be the point...

Indeed that was intended - I used the semi-half circle of the KDE logo and faded it out in three steps on top of the normal logo. The half-gears as they are now are less intrusive I think. Three circles would be too much and I think it wouldn't look as good as it does now. Right now it fills up the space vertically quite well, otherwise you'd have a more box-like are filled with the gears.

Just my interpretation of why I chose the half-gears, I hope you can make something of it. Besides, thanks for the nice words.

A simple, elegant wallpaper. Looks great without getting in the way. It is VERY professional - something that would be perfect to have on a Linux desktop at work.

The biggest advantage with this wallpaper is its usability. Goes with alot of themes and styles.

Nicely done!

Thank you. I'm really happy to see that you agree on my starting goal for this wallpaper, usability and a non-intrusive design. The colors are indeed quite neutral and I've tried the wallpaper against different themes, styles and color-schemes and I never got upset by the color combinations.
