I rendered this scene quite some time ago, using Corel's Bryce 5. I think the original image was too colorful to be suitable as a wallpaper, so I used gimp to 'desaturate' (convert to gray-scale, sort of), and then I used color-balance to add a blue/cyan tint. Finally, I wanted the left edge to be dark, to improve the visibility of the icons, so I overlaid a radial gradient layer. I've been applying these techniques to some of my old 3D images - and people seem to enjoy them, so I may do a few more. Here are some others:

Bryce has a bit of a learning curve, but not as much as linux software such as Blender. Once you know how to use it, it doesn't take very long to create scenes like this. Over time, you can accumulate objects (tables, chairs, glass blocks, etc.) and then simply arrange them different way. Once you've got some objects, it's as easy as moving furniture.

Here's an idea: instead of placing the KDE letters over the scene, why not put a notebook PC (running KDE, of course) on the table?
