Description:

Often when you use your desktop, you want to sort icons. For example, on the 1rst screenshot I want to sort the icons on the top right corner, but not all icons (I want to keep most of the icons at their place).

At the moment, I can only sort all the desktop... So, a nice feature could be to allow the user to sort groups of icons and not only the whole desktop.

From that point, we can imagine sorting the icons in a shape defined by the user and many variants !

You should also read the following idea :

turn off auto-arrange of icons?

Then you can arrange the icons in any way you like and they ought to stay there?

I think he wants an auto grouping, sort of like the icon bubbles or desktop smart area KDE4 brainstorms. Basically it is a call for a much more usable desktop, with better handling of icons.

I think this is just one more feature of all the same idea with those.

I was often annoyed by this but
never been able to put it down as
clearly as you.
Arrange icons is totally useless
if you have many groups of icons on your desktop. It destroys any
layout.
What a simple and great idea. You dont even need a new menu option. Just select some icons and only arrange those.

Don't be sorry, I am glad to know your opinion and know why you clicked "bad" ! This is only an idea and a need I and many friends mine (having tons of icons on their desktops)have. ;-)

I was wondering, why do you hate icons ?

BTW, you should read the following post, it explains how things could look if you continue pushing forward the idea of icons (and icons groups on the desktop :

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=37833

As you can read, you could have a new way of managing icons but also to organize how icons, applets, running apps... could be sorted and arraged on your desktop !

So, you could define an area for sorting everything on the wallpapers you designed ;-)

That's kind of lazy, isn't it? I mean, why don't you just put them all together one by one, it can't be that much of an effort. ;-P

Yes, it is lazy, but I would prefer defining this idea as "enhancing the look & feel experience". Isn't that what ergonomy is all about ;-)
