Description:

hey it is time we moved away from the windows style maximize button which just makes the window take up as much space as possible and do it a little smarter similar to the one used by mac os. to maximize to the optimal size of the window instead of going to the max possible height and width.

ex: a web page that is 600 by 600 pixels, why resize the window past 600x600

it is better for multitasking which is a strength of linux.

here is a link to a better description
http://forevergeek.com/apple/mac_vs_windows_its_all_about_the_maximize_button.php

sorry there is nothing in download really but an image, dont know what else i would put there...

 Maximize vert/hor

You know that it is possible with kwin to only maximize the window vertical / horizontal?
Just klick with right / middle mouse-button on the maximize-button and you will see ;)

Nevertheless, and "intelligent" way would be interesting, too. But, as all such suggestions, only as an option. I would turn it off...

 Smart enough?

And how about on dynamic webpage where text and everything else gets re-ordered when makin browser to fullscreen?

And is that smart max button as optional or would it replace normal?

I use alot that middle-/second-button and personally i dont like that MaOSX way to do that. If i want webpage to be fullscreen i dont get it if i dont first drag page to upper left corner and then resize it to fullscreen by draggin with mouse from bottom right corner.

If it would be just a optional button to be added it would be better way to add it.

KDE it just must be...

 Bad idea

I have used OSX and the most frustrating future was this so called 'smart' maximizing. I was manually resizing windows because of this. What I would like to see is that KDE remembers the positions of my windows. Everytime I open a screen it opens at the left top corner of my screen.

 size toggle V maxing

What about two buttons:

1. blow up to maximum size.

2. Toggle to previous size.

Windows can easily be resized with the mouse, but it might be nice to have an A and B size toggle to accomplish this smart-max'ing. That would make it a bit more configurable (though maybe more of a nightmare for the developers).

i think there already is an option to smart maximize (though I'm not totally sure...right click on the window decoration, select advanced->special application settings->workarounds?

 Consideration

well i am not sure if you can do it now, i looked where you said but didn't feel like playing around with the settings too much right now.

to answer to some concerns i wouldn't expect kde to force any one way to have maximizes but to offer choices which is the linux way.

i did think about it a little more and thought it might be nice to be able to do it only when holding control or something like that to make it easy to do either depending on the situation.

by the way this is my first thing posted here although i have been looking at kde-look.org a lot over the last year or two. do things posted here really get considered for kde4?
