kpdf+search engines seamless integration

KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

This is not a mockup is just a suggestion.
As new search engine become popular, the actuals command-line parameters
of kpdf and text-editors become too restrictive.

Just adding a --search option in command line the transition
between search engine (my proposal is strigi) and the viewer/editor
become seamless.

I explain better, actually you search
for the word "hydroeletric", and
the search engines shows you that you have a document, generic.pdf,
containing this word.
If you open it you need then to hit ctrl+f, insert hydroelectric and go to
desired part.

If instead the search engine could launch:
#kpdf generic.pdf --search "hydroelectric"
you would find yourself directly at
the desired page (or at first instance, with search dialog open).

This can be valid also for kwrite, kate, etc.etc.

So you propose that the search engines (like Strigi or others) should call the app with --search "keyword" parameter when the user open a document by clicking in Strigi, is it?

I think it's a really good idea and could be a cool feature for most KDE apps in KDE4. You should propose the idea in Kde-Usability list or Appeal.

 strigi integration

Great idea!

I think this a wonderful idea for useability and will keep it in mind for the various Strigi GUIs.

Remember that the core of Strigi is the daemon. I'm counting on you guys to integrate search functionality in your applications and call Strigi over dbus to get results.

How about offering a standard DBus interface Strigi can call to start a search in the app? So when Strigi opens the app, it passes the search request too.
