Description:

EDIT: OK, Would someone voting this down take the time and tell how it is a daft idea. Is there a good way to switch between- and managing tasks that I'm not aware? It's not like it'd take anything away from people who like their taskbar as it is, but anyways, please take your time and explain me why mentioned functionality is not a good idea. Thank you!

alt+tab type of taskbar that would pop up where your cursor is when (for example) windows-key is held and disappear at unhold. Additionally window could move with the cursor at boundaries for easy placement out of the way.

New (additional) taskbar would have the same functionality as normal taskbar; minimize/maximize with graphical clues, right click-menu with the added benefit to show windows from all desktops divided with separators, or if there\\\'s plenty, in their own sub-menus, with functionality to drag&drop tasks from desktop to another.

Anyways, just food for thought about a quick access, roomy taskbar that doesn't clutter or hog space from desktop. Sorry about the non-informative screenshot, I can only hope the explanation helps :) In case anyone likes the idea and has the ability to make better mock-up of off it, feel free to!

 Hmmm....

I do think that with the new design for KDE4 there will have to be careful consideration for small screens, the default nowadays takes up a lot of screen space.

The new design may solve this but I think people are too familiar with the standard (idea of a) taskbar which works well as it is, even if they take up space, it should always be there, just better designed- which seems to be the plan.

Two thoughts, maybe a dropdown box of current tasks, dropping when you hover over it but also comes up when the win key is pressed? People seem to love the idea of these things for "Create, Communicate,..." menus at the top.

Another point, you know the menu bar in apps has Alt key shortcuts, e.g. "File" is usually "Alt+F"- I think that would be a simple yet effective addition to task switching.

Good points, especially with people wanting and NEEDING the taskbar. I guess it depends on how much outside of the box are you willing to think (no need to disable normal taskbar by any means, though). For me it feels more efficient way for task switching: I don't know if there's been any studies how much time one wastes moving mouse over to the bottom of the screen to open up windows, but after a while it starts to feel very tedious for me.

Other point is that it's easier to sort out information in vertical than in horizontal columns and thus new taskbar wouldn't nearly as exhausting experience as the regular one :) Dropbox would make a nice addition, but ONLY if it could be summoned by some key to where cursor is.

Also there would be lots of space in a window that is ultimately limited only by desktop size and thus could show all tasks from all desktops and allow easy rearranging between them, which functionality KDE lacks as it is, as far as I know anyways.

Ultimately it should just be tested. I fear such taskbar would prove annoying in actual use, but on the other hand it might be a revelation! (or more probably a nice addition)
