Description:

This is just an idea at this point and not very useful but certainly very cool.

I propose being able to place a 3D model of an object or environment as the backdrop for the desktop. Then anytime you want to update the view you adjust the perspective of your view. This could be accomplished by having an entry in the right click context menu for adjust model, which brings up a slider that can then be used to rotate the model to a new orientation.

 Interesting idea but

This website is not really made post idea like that. What you are talking about might be cool, but you will have to learn a programming language (C++ or Java in this case might be appropriate), OpenGL or an other 3d renderer engine (like the one used by marble) and how the 3D model actually work internally.

Good luck!

*To use it on desktop, just replace the background plasmoid with the one you made in KDE4 code.

 Possible Containment

This would be a great possibility to test the containment system in the KDE 4 series.
The idea would be to create a containment that behaves like a desktop but use a 3d model in the background.
The context menu should add the possibilities to select a background image for the model, change the angle and lighting, and perhaps use blending modes.
OpenGL would be most likely be the best option for the rendering of the models, as for the language you choose, it is up to you thanks to the Cross framework.

Well this has already been done by the Beryl project and looks great (install is a little weird but there are many guides)

I think you have misunderstood what I am talking about. I am running compiz fusion .7.2 and there is nothing like this as an option.

What I am suggesting is not a 3d desktop on a cube or other polygon, but rather a background that is in its self a 3 dimensional object that is then flattened (or not) to represent a 2d image. Then say if you want to update the background you rotate the image to display another view.

Imagine what looks like the image of a nature scene with some trees, a stream, clouds, and such that are in a plane view, but say you want a more angled view parallel to the stream you simply rotate the background to accommodate this change.

Or an image of your favorite sports car on a side view but you want to rotate it about to show more of the front grill.

I see what you're getting at. It's like a QuicktimeVR application running in the background that renders the background itself. I like the idea...

BTW, it would be even better without the slider, but just slowly rotated around.

You could have shots of the interiors of famous mansions, your favorite car, or whatever rotating. Honestly, I think you're on to something. Now get to programming and make it a reality!

I guess all you would need is an application that did Quicktime VR or something similar and you can use the KDE Control Center to set it up to render the desktop and have it spin.

I agree with this.
The three dimensional wallpaper/map,
could include a script,
telling the "camera/point of you",
how to change angle or smoothly move around,
as the time passes.
Unless the user wants to select his own point of view.

...and why such a good idea would get 43% rating? (negative trolling, maybe?)

Anybody else have any ideas on if this is a good idea or not, or how it may be improved?

This is a great idea but think about how much RAM and CPU power would this require. I don't think that will be much of a problem because of memory increasing all the time and technology changing so great idea. :)

I really don't think that cpu or ram usage is a concern the only time they would take a hit is during the actual update process. I am not a programmer so I would need verification on this, but it seems logical.

 for visible only

I guess that would be _really_ cool.
You could make it the way, that in the Desktop Preferences (or however it's called in KDE 4) there are several possible modes: One with a slider, one without, but with a rotating model and so on. But in my opinion it should be possible to have also complete 3d scenes including water and so on rendered directly onto the desktop.
As already mentioned in the Video Background Topic, this feature should be inactive while a maximized window hides the Desktop. Maybe it should be inactive only for those areas where windows hide the background, even if they're not maximized, if you understand what I want to tell ;)

Good luck with this idea
