Description:

I had a go at actually trying to code it into the GTK engine but it seems to be hard to make the window transparent after it has been realized by GTK so it would probably need changes to GTK itself to work.

GTK is already going to support it, but as a cairo-based special widget, and *not* for the entire GTK. Don't forget GTK is a broad UI toolkit, and multiplataform.

 Not as comple. theme

In OS X is similar transparency for some things and it look there pretty. But I do not want this on Linux as also on OS X as theme: Vista is served already slowly, because many windows elements are transparent, whole transparent windows the Linux desktop usability would harm.
But only as the further function in GTK for individual elements - as additional engine - it is cool.
Sorry for my bad English.

Turn on blur in compiz-fusion to achieve the same effect. Or make sure the opacity is set at like 90 or so for whatever window/program you want.

 Technically Possible

This is technically possible currently. It does require that the app is written to take advantage of the features of GTK+ and that you are running a compositing window manager. Furthermore, the GTK+ engine needs to RGBA aware.

AFAIK, the only engine that has support for this is the next release of the Murrine engine (http://www.cimitan.com/blog/2007/12/12/gtk-rgba-transparent-widgets-with-the-murrine-engine/)

I was actually trying to modify Murrine to do it myself but couldn't figure it out and gave up. Its great to see its been done, I might actually get around to making the theme in the screen shot when the code is released :)
