Pointer's Shadow

Description:

OK, this is only an idea that I've had for some time. No screenshots this time, sorry.

I've noticed that on KDE we get a shadow undeneath the mouse pointer on the screen. I think this is a great feature that adds to KDE's realism. Now, the thing is that this special pointer shadow is very plain and it doesn't change at all, although you see many other applications which have buttons that try to ive you the idea that they are a little above the window, and other spaces, like fill in spaces, give you the impresio to be like in a gap and the rest of the window is what shows you the normal level of things.
Wouldn't it be real cool to have the pointer's shadow recognize these elevations on the windows, buttons, scroll bars, etc, and just as a shadow increases or decreases depending on the distance you have with an object change its shadowiung rate?

The closest you get to an object which gives you the impression that it stand a little higher than the rest can have a lesser shadow or a more defined shadow. In turn when an object (windows an stuf) seem to be farer bellow than the rest this smart shadow can be a little bigger or more blurry.
I'm not a developer and this is just an idea for KDE 4 which could show add a lot of personality to our favorite desktop. Don't you think? The link takes you to a pictura with an idea of changing shadows

 Counterintuitive?

It might get a little too complex and counter-intuitive imo. For example, what if the cursor is only half on a button? Does only half the shadow get changed? I'm also not completely sure if your idea will be apparent to the end user... after all buttons are usually quite small, and it *might* just end up feeling weird. But then, I'd like to see some kind of visual reference.

By "visual reference" I meant screenshots, etc.

 shadow

Sorry, I can't come up with a screenshot right now, but if anyone understand my idea and know more than I do about working with images it would be nice to have a screenshot. It isn't my idea to make this a big show, and I understand that it may be complicated to apply but I meant to have a simple pinter show that is not a still on but dinamic which can recogize changes on the screen as if there were objects higher than others.

 errr... howto

implement that?
aside from technical issues (you'd nee to pass the cursor control to the styles as they're the only classes that have an idea about the appereance of most widgets; you'd need to "realtime" create and update cursor icons; cursor icons are X stuff, noticed that you need to restart KDE to update the cursor theme? using translucent pixmaps under the cursor all the time to mimic a shdow would be dog slow and i doubt X will allow to update HW cursors on the fly in near future)...

do you have a slight idea about /how/ complex realistic shadowing is?
(hint: the size of a shadow will hardly notable change between two objects with a not überdifferent z value, but it's usually broken depending on the view angle, the light source and the position of the two objects related to each other and to the spectator. create a sharp shadow with a bright light and try playing around a bit - and make sure no one sees you ;) )

the "material" of the widget (e.g. whether it mimics a dull, metallic, glossy,.. whatever look, i.e. the way it reflects light has much more impact on the appereance of the shadow - e.g. try to throw a shadow onto a mirror ;) )

in the end the cursor shadows are typically small and i doubt small changes that would be triggered by changes in the 3d surface would be visible (especially if the z-change isn't sharp, if you played with the shadows as suggested above, you'll know =) )

Thanks fpr telling me the implications that my suggestions makes. I'm glad to see that I can get a sort of profesional responses. But maybe this thing could be implemented in KDE 10 if not now, when computers are more powerful and capable of implementing this shadaow idea I proposed.
I stated in the beginnig that I was not a developer but I as a normal user can see what "could" look better and don't think about the "code." thanks
