Description:

Requirements.
mkvtoolnix
mencoder

This script uses mencoder to convert Matroska (*.mkv) video files to Avi (Divx or Xvid).

DTS audio is a problem with older versions of mencoder. If your matroska file has DTS audio you will most likely not be able to convert the file with an older version of mencoder. Please compile a new version of mencoder.

Changelog:

v2.0

Added selectable Audio language
Added selectable Subtitles & Font size
All available tracks are displayed when file is loaded.

 Subtitles

Does it support converting the subtitles found in the mkv?

Only the audio and video are converted to the avi. No options for subtitles.

Maybe at a later time or I may create an option to use the commandline tool alltoavi. Alltoavi has support for several options on mkv files.

 Why?

Why would you want to convert something in an open and free format to non-free deprecated format?

It is a bad thing to do and you shouldn't write software that helps people doing it.

Gimmie a break! If you dont want to do it then dont.

I use it to watch on my stand alone DIVX DIVX DIVX DIVX DIVX DIVX (Should I say it again?) DIVX player!

Do you have a stand alone player that plays mkv? Not likely.

Who the @$#! do you think you are trying to tell people what they can and cannot convert to?

Take a @$*!*%# hike!

Here is 126,000 reasons why.

Apparently people want to do it.

Just because many people do it or want it, doesnt make it right.

I think the free software community has an especially hard time promoting free standards and file formats in a proprietary world.
If you develop software to convert from free formats to non-free formats than you promote non-free codecs.

Do you think someone is ever going to develop a mkv-standalone-player if all standalone-player-customers convert their media to avi?

Non-free formats and non-free software don't solve problems, they ARE the problem.

And please don't feel offended and don't start cursing around, I was being really friendly, just trying to make a point.

Mkv is better in just about every way. It can and will stand on its own merit.

In the mean time, I and others, do not have to needlessly wait / suffer.

If it makes you feel any better I AM on the waiting list for Popcornhour.

Good, you made ya point! Very idealistic!

But this doesn't solve the problem that I CAN'T watch the mkv-Files on my Player.

Just to remember DivX & Xvid started as free-codecs and see what thay are now. It's just a matter of time till MKV goes the same way.

 Xbox360

by mrebus on: Nov 29 2008

the reason every one needs mkv to avi is the xbox360 does not support mkv. and if you want to play your mkvs you need to convert them to avi.

 XBox 360?

by ZimN on: Dec 20 2008

Score 50%

That is maybe your reason, but not mine.

I don't have a XBox 360. I have an DVD-Player which allows me to play DivX/Xvid-Files, but no mkv.

And there more DVD-Players which doesn't support MKV out there then XBox & PS3 together.
