Description:

Here's another module in the Four Corners GUI.

This module is used for every thing that needs to alert the user. This approach is usefull because the user always looks and pays attention to this spot to be alerted.

The way it works is the same as the rest of the Four Corners modules, you fly your mouse cursor to its corner and it flies out. When the module is not active it acts very similar to a standard system tray. If you right click an icon when it's minimized, it gives the standard right click menu. Click and icon once and you will get that applications "widget", you can see this with the screenshots of the Kontact and Amarok "widgets". Double clicking restores the app.

The messager will be configurable for many apps. I can see its functionality relying a lot on application's DCOP commands. It will use a standard script syntax that will allow scripts for any app to be written for it, and added to the Add Notifications menu.

Instant messages, new emails, system updates, antivirus updates and all other events that alert the user will come from this place.

I will be putting up Hi-Res images that i'll link to later so you can see better screenies, thanks for any comments left, i really appreciate it!

The Manager module from the Four Corners gui can be seen here:

i think it is a good idea. while i love your mockups and ideas, i don't really get the four corners. i know, fitts law etc, but in practise - how usefull is it?
i 'd rather see this as a kind of desktop application, the desktop being the app...

This GUI is based on the assumption that it will be implemented with the new XGL technologies, if you havent seend any of the videos displaying what this stuff can do, you should to get an idea of the physics of this. I'm not sure, but if you've used OS X with dashboard and set corners to bring up dashboard, you can see how quick it is to just fly the mouse up to one corner and have a module pop out.

The point with these modules is to have four corners for four specific and important OS tasks such as managing files and managing messages and notifications. I can see this being (with XGL capabilities) MUCH faster than precisely clicking on the K menu each time and navigating through menus only that really limit functionality.

Thanks so much for commenting, its really appreciated, especially criticisms and new ideas

ok, that might very well be a good idea. or 4 buttons on the kicker, might do the trick, too... anyway, i'd like to give some comments on the mockups themselves.

you've covered 2 windows now:
manager and messager.
first, messager might be a notifier or the 'factory' that is mentioned on kde-artist.org, right? it holds things happening, stuff like that. i think its a great idea.
the manager is what i've been thinking about, too. it think you might add the 'actions on icons' idea. if you never heard about it, it simple: as icons are getting bigger, we might display icons on them for common actions. like play, remove, add to playlist and information. i just added this so you can see it (and how my initial idea is. i'm a bad artist, so i'd rather see you adding stuff you like to your creations instead of me doing the opposite :D) http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=34996

grtz

I've never seen it before (AFAIK), but if implemented correctly I think it could grow nice. But it should be optional offcourse, as with anything, I assume some will and some won't like it.

Surely, the aim with this GUI is to present the most intuitive and user friendly approach while also being as powerfull at the same time AND hiding tons of customizations & features right behind what you see.

thanks :)

the transparency needs to start at the same transparency of the bar then can fade down into being less transparent

Seeing as there is no sense in having two amarok icons (second screenshot) in the drop down amarok widget i will put the album cover in that place, seems a lot better to me. ? Updated screens will come

I use the bottom left for the K menu(flick the mouse down there) and top right to close maximised windows, I think kde4 definitly needs search in the main menu. After doing my mock ups i saw this and it seems quite similar to my system tray tabs one.

If i could place it in the bottom right corner (like a system tray) it would work well for me.

nice work
