KDE4 Brainstorm

Description:

I would like for there to be a data base of default name that are given to MP3 and OGG Flash Players and to HDD players which emulate HDD. Building this data base will let you do some really cool suff, like syncing your player with your 1-5 star amaroK music at a click of a button. I know some people will like to change the name of their player or the player will not be in the data base, they should be able to add the name of their player to their personal data base, by simple right clicking on the drive.

I hope you get the Idea.

 like an usb-drive?

You can do this already if you play around a bit with udev. I managed to get my camera and usb-drive recognised as different devices (with different entries in /dev and different mount-points). From this it is only a small step to sync your files.

I think the database you describe is better kept out of KDE. You could have a udev-rule writing front-end though, with a list of devices.

 Mess Around?

If you can't do it though a wizard or service menu, you can not do it. Its all about the usabillity. If OS X did not have the Ipod it would would probably have it the way I would.

I love Windows gaming especially the game where you have to do all your work before it crashes.

please don't post idea here, it's mainly a KDE application database... post them on kde-look/kde4 brainstorm, or at least put [idea] or something in your title

Posts like this make me think it would be good have a sort of "moderation" on the "Improvement" submission.

Before posting "brilliant" ideas, please take the time to educate yourself how a modern Linux desktop system works. This you're proposing is a HAL task, and it is *already* implemented as a foundation for programs. *Exactly* what you're asking. There are several FDI files with capabilities of every kind of hw (cameras, players, and so on) and, for example, in the case of audio players, telling what mime/type they support and so on
