There are two ways for 3D effects: aiglx and xgl. Only GL is in aiglx and xgl. READY : not all the purchasers of S-Vista will be able to use 3d effects. With Linux we can.

well if you have an nvidia-card and the nvidia beta-drivers you dont need xgl or aiglx to run beryl or compiz ;)

Actually you do need either Xgl or AIGLX in order to run Beryl or Compiz. The current nvidia 1.0-9629 binary drivers (since it recently came out of beta) supports the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap which was the last piece of the puzzle that was missing from the binary driver to support the effects in hardware. Before that you had to emulate the effects in software. The x.org 7.1 release has AIGLX support built into the server, so you don't have to download Xgl or a modified X server to run Beryl or Compiz.

I'm guessing the GL comes from the last two letters in OpenGL. The GL meaning Graphics Library.

I've seen Vista in "action" with Aero running, its horrible. Thank goodness it crashed and never came back up.

Well, don't get me wrong. but we(linux users) are far from ready for GL. The existing window managers are still in early developement versions and they crash quite often. Of course it looks cool but I would not use them in their present shapes on my everyday pc. Good for showing off imho though.

I've used Sabayon linux, wich is gentoo based, and it's using beryl, aiglx and is very stable. I messed around with the settings so much and it never crashed. But it is still in development.

It's seems that a little conversation has been developed around this GL :)
Well, I tried beryl and then I swtiched to compiz (for give it a try as well!).
I found out that compiz is too stable then beryl and it uses less resources! It's funny: I tried beryl with my ATI drivers installed and that works fine, but used a lot of ram and cpu, then I tried compiz, and that was better. After all I installed edgy and configured it to run without ATI drivers (I forgot them! :P) and compiz works fine anyway! Beryl doesn't start at all!! LOL
Apart from that, I use compiz everyday with metacity themes and I find it very useful: what about having 4 (or more) viewports and move a window just by dragging it without clicking with the right bottom, and then chosse "Move to another workspace" and then again trying to figure out in which workspace I put it (but just rotating a cube with your mouse)?
Well, when some friends of mine give me their computer (windows, gosha!) I try to move windows all around or just trying to get all my windows resized to choose the one I need as I do in linux! It's addictive! LOL
If you've never tried, try compiz instead of beryl: you can't set up so much options as in beryl, but what you will get it's enough for sure! You can count on it!
I'm italian too, by the way! ;)
