Description:

The screenshot show the Navigating Idea that Konquerer could use instead of a Scroll Bar...
Previous webpages visited would appear above the current page ... replacing the back button ...

A similar idea could be integrated into any application that deals with sequential pages ....

Changelog:

Changed the Screenshots to incorporate some of the comments provided.

"...However there is a limit of space on a screen,
and I fear this would take up too much of it to make good use of the rest of the screen..."
^
First Screenshot shows the sliding NaviBar showing just enough to replace the Scrollbar, and the Back and Forward still.

"...Also in the new screenshot i discovered a new thing.
If the pages overlap like you've made them,
there will probably be a problem determining which adress to display in the adressbar..."
^
Second Screenshot shows the full Navibar now with a perspective and only allows one webpage the main window at a time.

THANKS ALL ... KEEP UP THE COMMENTARY

 size and adress

I must say I like the basic idea of a visual representation of history. However there is a limit of space on a screen, and I fear this would take up too much of it to make good use of the rest of the screen. Also in the new screenshot i discovered a new thing. If the pages overlap like you've made them, there will probably be a problem determining which adress to display in the adressbar.

i was thinking that the display could show the last "fully viewed" page ...

the idea stems from a Desktop Environment I am working on which would assume a 1920x1080 widescreen resolution ... this is because I foresee a the rise of the home computer again which would hookup to the next generation 1080p televisions ...

thanks for your comments

I wouldn't like it to be a scrollbar replacement, but the idea is interesting if implemented the right way.

There is something similar in The GIMP! - when the graphic doesn't fit the window, you have that small button that displays smaller picture in the floating borderless window and you can navigate using that - move your mouse over the part of the picture you want to look at...

i think it shouldn't be a replacement for the scrollbar(i'm sure that this will never be done), but additional optional feature... that would be great.. mainly i like the idea of having possibility to scroll to the previous pages(also configurable...)

it's good idea. but there have to be done some changes...

 KViewShell?

This kind of navigation assistant is already implemented in KViewShell and its ancestors KDvi, KGhostView and now Okular. In these print oriented document viewers a navigation bar is on the left where in the first place all pages are shown (like here each page in the history) and where a red rectangle on these page thumbnails shows the portion currently visible on the screen.

I really love this idea! Though. It should be configurable if the pages can be scrolled through continuously (I am not a friend of this, honestly). I also agree with others who don't want this to be a scrollbar replacement.

Moreover, it should be put in question, if such a navigation is really the right model for the history. For me, the thumbnail should be available only for the current document. Previous webpages are the _past_!
A better target would be replacing the konqueror tab bar with this: One opened several pages in one browser window. Each page gets one thumbnail and the instead of the tab one is doing the right thing: Switching between pages - like in print oriented viewers.
