Description:

NOTE: THIS MOCKUP IS NOT FOR A REPLACEMENT FOR KICKER, IT IS AN ALTERNATE "QUICK LAUNCHER"

Ok I think this would really be something cool to add to kde. It would utilize nice eye candy, however would also be very usefull.

My idea is to have a \\\"Horizontal Menu\\\" for the kicker

The icon should have that small triangle arrow \\\"shown on the \\\"system menu\\\" in screenshots. Except pointing to the side.

When the user clicks on a \\\"Horizontal Menu\\\" the icons inside it slide out. (screenshot 2)

This way people could have main icons- Multimedia, Games, Office. And when each one is clicked, the underlying icons slide out, moving all icons in its way along the kicker.

When it is collapsed again, the proper icons will slide back into place.

Note that by defalt the \\\"Horizontal Menu\\\" should stay open until the menu icon is clicked again. However, it should be optional to have the menu collapse after one of the \\\"spawned\\\" icons have been selected.

How would this handle large numbers of applications?

i.e. There are too many icons to fit on the kicker

even tough the person above me is right, i think its a cool idea. if you can code a little in python, java or any of the other languages which will be supported by plasma, i'd say give it a go as soon as plasma is more-or-less working ;-)

Well, new ideas should always be wellcome. But I just see a slight problem of usability: why would someone want to go all the screen along clicking icons from left to right, when a traditional menu has all the options a few centimeters away? I can look nice but usability is the most important thing.

Anyway, it is a new concept, and it could, maybe, be used as a base for something more mature. I do not dislike the idea, just find it a bit unusable.

So, nice one! :)

i dont think that you understand me, so let me try to explain further...

I am NOT talking about a replacement for the K MENU.

What I am talking about is something like the "Draws" function on Gnome.

The User can build these horizontal menu's themself.

For Example: A user wants to make a "draw" full of office applications. So they Click "add to panel" >> "Horizontal Menu"

Then they select an icon for the menu, and right click on that icon.

From here they can select applications to add to the menu. (as you would to a quick launcher tray)

As for having too many icons... the icons could shrink, and possibly go double layer when more space is needed.

Use Unix. Use Linux. Use Debian. Use KDE.

When I saw this I immediately thought of the quick launch applet. I think It would be great to have a quick launch applet that had this feature!
