Description:

This is kde 3.2, with no patches. I stuck transcurve on the background, configured the panel to my liking, added some device icons to the desktop and viola! kde3.2 has plenty of eye-kandy. if you don't have it, get it.
The tray is running: klipper, korganiser, kgpg, kmix, kwallet, knotes, kopete, and kmail (yes, it can dock to the panel now.) And all kde applications start in like 1/20 the time they did in 3.1




Changelog:

Changed the background to suit my distro :) and made an elliptical gradient.
I can't decide if this is better than my old one or not :/ The old one is a screenshot on the side now.

Ugh! Why is it that every single application in KDE is named Ksomething?! What happened to originality? Now, I know that we need to be able to distinguish the kde notepad with the gnome notepad or whatever, but would it not be possible to name an executable file something else (say knotepad) and then program something else (like, say notepad)? It would make much more sense, and very much help out in a whole range of places...

Yes, KDE 3.2 is really quite an amazing little thing :)

I'm talking about program names, not descriptions. KWrite is still called KWrite, even if it's described as a Text editor. But you are of course right to point out, that the descriptions are well done (and personally I think it's better than the GNOME policy of calling them just that, and nothing else (such as AbiWord just being called a Word Processor in the menu))

there's a very good reason for it - it allows me to distinguish KDE developed apps from others - and because these KDE apps are based on the QT framework, I know that they will load faster than their GTK equivalents.

I actually like the "k" thing , as it marks out the KDE apps quite clearly. It's a branding so to speak.

Kedit is easier than saying "Micosoft Notepad". Plus there's no limit to how much stuff you can put in :)

i'm not 100 per cent correct there - i should have said

"I know they will load faster than their GTK equivalents, if I am in KDE"

Of course, in Gnome, it's vice versa - gtk stuff loads faster (as the GTK stuff is loaded when Gnome starts up)

(and yeah - KDE 3.2 looks amazing - still trying to figure out how to get it installed on my Mandrake 9.1 system)

Yes, but i mean things start faster in kde3.2 than they did in 3.1. I think if i prelinked gnome it might get similar response time. But then, i still haven't prelinked kde yet :)

On the subject of naming, I've always found the whole naming scheme obscure and unnessecary. But this is an old discussion and oh well, it is not everybody who sees the usability aspects (KDE now supports the description part of .desktop files, giving a good posibility for another place to show the KDE thing).

On the subject of installing KDE on Mandrake 9.1, try Konstruct :) It works a treat :)
