Description:

Katiuska is a theora encoder frontend. It uses ffmpeg2theora, mencoder, the encoder_example that comes with the theora libs and a little gpl bash script that I found with google.

It can encode mostly any kind of video that ffmpeg and mencoder can (avi, mpeg4 and 2, quicktime etc).

Katiuska is also now a DVD ripping tool with an easy to use interface and default settings. Just select your audio and subtitle language if any and you're good to go.

This is my first app ever so it might not work for you at all :)

IMPORTANT: You need to install the theora library, kommander from kde 3.4 to make it work and lsdvd for the dvd ripping part.

For installation: Just run ./setup.sh as root and then type "katiuska" to use it.

What about adding a simple shell script that launches .kmdr file,
instead of adding an alias in /etc/profile? It's much safer!
It should look like that:

that looks great but not all distro have "/opt/kde/share/apps/quanta/scripts", as an example in debian it's in another place as there is no /opt. how could I detect that?

Just chose a directory to put kmdr file in (or where kmdr files are by default) and substitute this path in A_PATH. The same for L_PATH: just chose kmdr-executor path, or simply leave it blank, if this app is in your path.

We need to finish our project tools, but here is how we handled it for the simple intaller. Install to
$KDEDIR/share/apps/kmdr-katiuska
The idea being that in the future we want to have kmdr-executor without arguments list all kmdr-* directories with application information. I hope in the coming weeks to release an up to date installer release.

There are other advantages to this. You can have multiple dialogs installed there and call them with @dialog(name.kmdr) and this will work great. You can even have other resources there.

To run the program create a script named katiuska and put it in /usr/bin.
#!/bin/sh
kmdr-executor $KDEDIR/share/apps/kmdr-katiuska/katiuska.kmdr

Maybe you'll want to help us with the installer too. ;-)

Do not write "optional" in the output file label. Just fill the field with the default name.
I think it makes more sense as being coherent with most UI I've seen. Maybe it's in the HIG, I don't remember.

i like katiuska very much, but it is almost impossible to make it work in freebsd :(
the first problem is, that you offer two binaries with katiuska (which kind of conflicts the concept of kommander, being not binary...); i couldnt find source for encoder_example and i was not able to build ffmpeg2theora on freebsd (trying to point it at the patched and built ffmpeg freebsd-port gave me loads of unresolved symbols during make). after installing the linux campatability layer in freebsd and copying/linking the full /lib und /usr/lib from my old ubuntu system to /compat/linux in freebsd ffmepg2theora and encoder_example finally work :) and converting files in katiuska works!!!
but dvd reading doesnt work yet...
what devices does katiuska look for? i created a symlink from /dev/cd0 to /dev/dvd and have aproriate entries in my fstab...
thanks for your help and for making katiuska!

Slackware 10.1 here and libtheora and ffmpeg2theora installed. it is converting mpg to theora ogg file but DVD scan is not working :(

Do you have lsdvd installed? Katiuska uses lsdvd. Try "lsdvd" in konsole and see what happens.

I really like this application, its very simple and effective.

Suggested Improvements:
-----------------------

* Better status window or progress bar, even if it was a command line bar.
* Ability to rip without encoding
* Video preview to preview resulting quality.

Apart from that it is very good.
