Description:

The mockup should be self-explanatory, but if you have any questions or comments just post them.

Basically, what I wanted to do is save some space in my screen. I don't want the fill and stroke dialog to take over my screen and I don't want to open and close them all the time.

This compact dialog should fix that :). Anyway, perhaps having it as an alternative dialog would be good

I like seeing the numerical values. sometimes are better than the graphical sliders.

On the other hand, If you are facing space problems, do like I do: enable shading windows at double-click event for metacity (or beryl - whatever). Place the dialog close to the top of the inkscape window and double-click to shade/unshade the dialog. This trick is useful for every app using dialogs.

well, that's pretty much the same as hitting Ctrl+F4 and then Shift+Crtl+F everytime I want to hide/show the dialog.

Still, the idea is to keep the dialog always visible and avoid it from taking such a large portion of the screen :).

the mockup looks not bad, but i think it is better to open the dialog and have all options right there without pressing an arrow there or an symbol there to fill in some numeric values or something like this. one of the great things of inkscape is the simple gui, not like in other programs with many functions which you must look for.

I don't think the numeric values are "hidden". they are right there!. The dialog should be expanded by default, you can hide parts of the dialog, such as the stroke styles which I think people don't use as much as the fill/stroke paint.

Besides, aren't you already clicking Tabs to show/hide some parts of the dialog. IMHO this un-tabbed dialog shows more controls than the current one and takes less space in your screen.

But anyway, you are right with the hidden text boxes, but that's easy to fix, make the color sliders a bit shorter and then make those text boxes visible, no big deal.

there you go... it's fixed now... the text entries are visible!, still it's smaller ;)
you might also want to hit F5 to refresh the screenshot, because I kept showing me the old one until I refreshed my web browser.

I don't say that this mockup is bad and if this would be the default in inkscape i can live with it, but only if there is the option to hide the dialog and not have it all the time visible (also not in a kind of sidebar like in other apps) :)

oh yes... this is supposed to be a window, which you can close, open, move... and even docking would be nice (but i think that's too much to ask). And of course, the dialog we all know and (some) love could still be available :)

Any way, this expandable dialog is a good idea for a GTK widget (not for Inkscape only, but GTK GUI-wide).

Dont you forget that Inkscape isnt the same as GNOME, altrought both uses GTK.

How is this compact? Why not have it just a series of icons (perhaps with the numerical value embedded) that when you click on it the list of possible values is displayed by a pop-out list of options. (IE take up no horizontal realestate).

I suppose this is how I remember old versions of Corel draw doing it (although that was years ago.. haven't seen it since)
