Wow, this wallpaper looks really great.

I just moved to Gentoo on my home box, because my RedHat subscription is up this April. I first tried Debian, but got sick and tired of having to use "experimental" and "testing" to get software that is almost a year old. (And this included XFree 4.3 for my NVidia card.) Gentoo is a mix of both worlds and I like it. Since I had time on my hands, I did a stage2 install and compiled all system software and kernel, and I can see improvements in performance with a kernel with my built in drivers (for NIC, etc) instead of modules. It's the first time in several years I've ran a kernel that I've compiled, since I've pretty much always been a RH user.

If you get time, I definately suggest giving Gentoo a try.

Odd KDE 3.1.5 is in experimental right now and it didn't take me 12 hours to compile it! Apt-get.org has pointers to all the cutting edge stuff you could want for Debian, and it will not take days to compile it and unlike Gentoo there are get install scripts that set up the packages correctly. Gentoo takes for ever to compile and thne leaves it up to the user to get the install config after the install.

Great wallpaper, maybe Gentoo will be as good some day.

You don't know what you're saying! Installing is truly delightful and with the excellent documentation it is SO EASY. And when I finished installing it didn't leave me with a feeling like 'Now what?' I had with several other distros.

I remember more time in the editor than I have ever done in Debian. Come on you have to edit your fstab, after manually creating your disk system. Edit your gub files, they really need a update-grub script like Debian has.

Gentoo was ment to be a learning tool, every fool should try it once. There is a reason that automatic transmissions out sells manual transmission in cars. Debian and SUSE have the best configuration scripting out there. It is very rare that you have any problem with the experimental packages. That is because a lot of time is spend to have very good install scripts that really work.

All to often the install script for Gentoo is your favorate text editor and a readme file. If that is what you like use it. Just don't brag that you spend ten hours getting KDE compiled and another two in the editor fixing up the configuration, because most people would rather use the computer for other things. Any speed gained is more than make up in the time lost in the portage compile time.

Gentoo was not what I wanted, Debian is a lot closer, enough of this flame. I still think it is a great wallpaper.

Whoops, did not mean this to sound like a flame. It's not meant to be. We use Debian on our servers, because stable *is* stable. But my point is simply that it just felt "wrong" to have to put in unstable/experiemental to get software that's over a year old now. KDE 3.2 is due to be released in a few days (and the betas are nice) but it'll probaby not make it's way into apt for how long?

I totally agree with your point below that Gentoo is great for learning. I just slapped it on my home server over the weekend and the problems I ran into were great experiences. I moved from a sendmail config to exim, a better pop3/imap system, etc.

Again, linux is about choice and we each have our own. I never meant it to slight Debian, because I do have a healthy respect for the Distro, i just prefer Gentoo for my own stuff now. :-)

Here's what I did to install KDE 3.1.5:

emerge kde

It did take a while, but I had less trouble with Gentoo than with Debian.

I was almost NOT going to do this wallpaper since I don't use Gentoo. But given the number of downloads it's had -- 108 since this morning -- I'm glad I decided to do it.

BTW, what does "Arigatou Gozaima" mean?
