Description:

I don't think that organizing menus differently really makes it any easier to find the right apps. Searching is neither an answer, because it's slow due the need of writing and it might return really much results. That's why I'm proposing a filter based ALI, which would work by combining different filters. Take a look at the mockups, they are quite self-explanatory. Please note that filters in the mockup should be replaced in a real program, because they are way too nondescript.

 Clever idea

I don't use much the K Menu so I don't know if I will use more its future incarnation(s) but I find this idea very intelligent and the interface very nice.

I would however explicitely add the filters "Most used", "Last used" and "Favorites" so that users retrieve directly apps they have already used. And I would also add an edit field in the "Active filters" to enable the users to enter whatever crosses their mind (part of a name, category, description, whatever) to be used as filter too.

I like that idea, maybe one could be activated by default when the user starts the ALI (it should be possible to configure that though). Have to add that when I update mockups, I also thought of adding an integrated run-textbox somewhere. I don't really know if it would be so usable because I normally just press alt-f2 when I want to use it. If the ALI however would be as fast as the current run-dialog, it could replace it.

 Reminds a little bit

of iTunes, the three-column-thing. It lists
|Genres| |Artists| |Albums|
If you click a Genre, the artist and album columns only show the artists/albums in the specific genre.

I don't know if that could be useful, but for example if you want to browse kde-look, you click "Internet" and get mail, ftp, IM and IRC clients, and finally you find a webrowser. With something like iTunes column thing (I think it's patented?), you can click Internet -> Webrowsers, or click Webrowsers directly

There should also be, as Maxilys said, "Most Used", "Last Used" and so on...

And finally, I would like to see a filter field where you can type your own keywords.

This ideas "roots" are actually in iTunes' filtering, or in screenshots at least. This is the "second generation" of an idea I got from those screenshots. The first idea was an application launcher-file browser-file search -app, but it would have been too complicated and I dumped it. When I later was thinking a new method for starting applications, I decided to use a similar approach. But I'll think of your suggestion, it seems to be a nice addition, although the idea was to have all needed filters by default.

 New thought

I have this ides of application content based search and install utility tool. I mean this can be very good for the newbies..like just mentioning 'Browser' or 'CD Burning' brings out the various availabe options and the user may choose whichever he/she likes(defauit). Also if certain app is not available or not running the latest version it can be downloaded from a repository site. How can ALI work here ? Also this has to be distro nuetral...

 has Great promise!

How would you envisage this could be configured/customized?

For instance how to get a certain app to appear in one filter and not the next?

What if there are too many icons returned by a filter, how could they sort/filter them?

How could they change the default icon/color/size?

I see the analogy with amarok dynamic folders, but its a novel concept for the menu-accustomed, so I think your concept needs more fleshing out...

 Great Idea

Great idea. The only thing I would change is make it much more compact, so it could be integrated into the menu.
