Description:

I think a unified system for file load/save dialog-boxes (but also for other dialogs) would be a good idea for KDE4.
Dialog-Boxes should have ONE look in all applications, independent of the different programs. This is not a problem of KDE, but of all Linux-GUIs.
e.g. : When a user switches from Windows to Linux, he is confronted with so many different-looking dialog-boxes, he must have the impression that this system is some kind of "patched" together in a confusing way.

I know, this "problem" can't be corrected directly by the Desktop Environment, because it's written in the different programs. But it would be a really great improvement, if KDE and GNOME would work together here and develop a really intuitive dialog-box system for the user. Maybe there could be a workaround then for other programs (e.g. xmms, opera) to "grab" their dialog-boxes, hide them and display a normal one instead. The content must then be transferred into the hidden ones.

What is NOT part of this brainstorming: How should this dialog-boxes look like?
Well I think there are good ideas already out there. For example the GNOME-Way with the clickable folders.
Also have a look at the ideas for navigation-bars here:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/%22Navigation+Bar+Reloaded%22?content=40135
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/Clickable+slashes+in+path+bar(filemanag)?content=35637
Maybe the dialogs could include such a bar...

But MOST IMPORTANT: It should really be a unified system, the GNOME-dialogs should not look much different, so a "real" dialogue between the kde-folks and the gnome people should start!

I really hope for the whole linux-world that some day KDE nad GNOME will find a way together here! I've heard of improvements in working together last year. Well if that weren't empty promises, a unified dialog-system could have a chance.

 Not even in Windows

Most, but not all, Windows programs use the system's open/save/print file dialog boxes.

In *NX the situation is even worse, every toolkit uses its own dialogs and every major version of every toolkit changes them! :-(
