Description:

I would like to have a central Place for changing the Icons for all my Applications, Devices and so on without to make/download a complete Iconset or copy the Icons in the "/usr/share/icons" (for example) folder via root, when I just want to have some few Icons changed.

************************

Here are my suggestions:

- as you can see on my attached File, it's an extra Tab at the "Icons" Section, where you can see all your currently used Icons for Applications, Filesystems etc..(selectible).

- You can easily select an individual Icon for each App, Device etc...

- This will automaticly create/update an Individual Iconset which will be used. All your Installed Iconsets won´t be changed in any way. It just uses the current as an "starting point"

- With the Button at the bottom, you can create a Tar archive which contains your modified Iconset, that can be installed like a normal Iconset (for sharing or backup)

- The Icons that you choose will be copied in a central Folder for each user with read-write permissions like "/opt/kde4/share/iconarchive/USERNAME"

************************

Hope my explanation makes everyone understand my idea.... and of course, i hope you like it ;)

maybe there´s already a better way to make this, but I don't know it..

Sorry for my bad English and Gimp skills

Changelog:

****Update 02.06.05****

- added 4 new buttons to add Applications, Devices, etc... that you can set an Icon for them ( for example: if you manually install an App, or game from source, which isn´t show in your list of known apps)

- edited the screenshot with more content and added a second screenshot with "smaller preview iconsize" selected.

****Update 01.06.05****

- As you add an Icon, KDE automaticly creates every needed size out of it (128x128x, 64x64, and so on...) and stores it in the "/opt/kde4/iconarchive/USERNAME/YYxYY" folder. You need to add 128x128 sized Icons as source, or you will lose image quality for the big Icons.

- the names of the added Icons are named exactly like the targeted Application, Device, etc. But when you already got an Icon named "amarok.png" (for example), KDE recognizes this and names it something like "amarok_01.png". So you can easily have more Icons for one and the same thing and can switch between them.

 Good idea!

I really like the idea, I've had to copy paste thousands of icons before. The only problem I find with it is when I want to put icons for different sizes. Should the program shrink them automatically or ask me for the different files?

Thanks for your replie!
I´m glad that you like it, and that I'm not the only one that wants to get rid of that copy and paste thing ;)

But now to your question... I´ve updated my description with a possible solution

 icon naming specific

I think KDE4 should just follow the icon naming specification, and that applications should keep their icons in a way that they are easily themeable. Both GNOME and KDE realized a while ago that having thousands of differently-located default icons is not only impossible to maintain, but difficult to theme and achieve a consistent look/feel. Once this is done (and we won't see it in KDE until at least KDE4 and we we are gradually seeing it in GNOME) desktop environments will be easy to icon theme.

I like this too. You could mix up icon sets easier
