Aqua Look - Proposal

Submitted:  Sep 8 2006
Updated:  Sep 9 2006

Description:

I've been using KDE theme called Baghira, which brings Mac OSX look and feel to KDE desktop, (http://baghira.sourceforge.net/) for long time now. I like to have this kind of cairo based theme engine in Gnome as well. This proposal to a Gnome theme engine developer... :-)

Update:

This was my KDE Baghira desktop before I start using Gnome: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=30919
I was using KDE 3.4 at that time.

Cimi will develop only *original* cairo besed engines.
So sorry but don't expect anything from me.

Cimi, Thank you for your comment and we appreciate your current work.
This is just a proposal for someone to pick up and it will solely depend on personal interest.

Anyway as a developer I can say that an osx engine written in cairo will be A LOT slower than a pixmap based theme.

Oh I see... That mean we will have to wait till Cairo get faster, isn't it. :(

Anyway here's a screenshot of a small hack I did on Murrine to remove the line under menubar (may be very personal interest). Sorry about messing up your beautiful work.

Well but even with a mac theme you still miss:

1.A mac menubar - I have a gtk hack for this => http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=241868

2.A drawer, see http://fire.sourceforge.net/images/screenshots/AquaGroupChat.png

3.Apps that use mac-style layout. I think that's the biggest problem. Here is a typical example: (svn clients for linux & mac)
Linux (rapidsvn) => http://rapidsvn.tigris.org/screenshots/linux-1024x768-1.png
Mac OS/X (svnx) => http://www.lachoseinteractive.net/_media/23_523_500.jpg

It's more than a theme issue - every svn clients on linux or windows look similar to RapidSVN, but no mac one would use that kind of layout (plain tree view + file list)

1. cool! is that hardcoded or an option?
2. don't know
3. I don't see anything that can't already be done, except the tabs.

1.hardcoded, maybe set by environment variable. Not configurable at runtime (too much work for this little function)

2.gnustep seems to have it, but I haven't seen any apps.

3.sure it can be done, but nobody does this now. Most of our apps look exactly like their windows counterparts ;)

 Bad deal!

NO bad deal!
first thing that differentiates OS X user interface from any other is the highly polished applications and simple nature of UI that is missing in gtk/gnome and MS windows.
I had tried desigining an OS X theme using apple art work, but soon I hit a dead end. I was trying to code the scrollbars and noted I can't do it. I cant get the blue convex highlight scrollbar button on GTK. GTK wants all scrollbuttons to be a rectangle.
Also, when we come up with very pale, think window borders, there must be a dropshadow to make us feel the focus. But by default gnome or x11 does not have this.
I would suggest to design better gnome thmeme rahter than imitating aqua interface and end up with a frakenstein.
Oh after all, it is only my openion

This proves that Gnome also more MS Windows centric than OSX, isn't it :-)

Hope to head back to KDE for more freedom....

I'd say you gave up too easily on the scrollbars. Unless I'm not understanding what you were trying to do, I have many themes that appear to not be square. But yes, gtk needs serious work.

bvc, I am talking about the traditional OS X scrollbar button, that turns blue on focus/press. Even firefox themes on Linux cannot get it completely highlighted as in OS X. In windows, there is this firefox theme called "macfox" which has the exact scrollbar implementation.
If you still dont get what I am saying, install any of the osx themes on gnome with the blue scrollbar. Try clicking on the arrow and notice that the image is a square. The non-square buttons that you have probably are taking up a square space and showing a circle or something.

 Why?

Also, I don't see why any themer would enjoy (and, seeing as they are working for free in their time, that's how they should feel about their work) basically mechanically imitating someone elses work; epsecially when they could be forced to remove it due to copyright infringement at any time. If you want the OS X look that much, it would be much easier to just buy one as your next computer.

That's a good ponit...Linux should neither be MS Windows nor OSX. We seriously need a fresh look
