Description:

I have a new idea for an advanced printer option.
When ever you have a long document you might want to print certain pages in a special way.
For example you have a 25 pages document:
-for page 1-10 -> 2 pages on one page in black and white.
-page 11 has important information and a graphic on it so you migt want to print only 1 page per page, high quality, and this one should be in coloure too
-page 12-20 is ok when you print it 4 pages on 1 page and b/w, but you need page 18 in coloure
-page 21-25 will be 1 page per page b/w

right now it is difficult and takes alot of time to do something like that. I think of a graphical interface in the advaced printer options where you can set special options for each page within the document you want to print. Maybe with little thumbnails of each page to make it a litte \\\\\\\"nice-looking\\\\\\\".
You can group pages to determain the number of pages per page and you can set the quality of the outprint for each page.

Changelog:

I added a picture to give you an idea how it COULD look (pleas be gental with this mock-up, i just put something together in a few minutes to give you an idea)

The green thumbs can be high quality, the two blue pages will be on one page.

... but that odt (oasis) format is a scandal !
12K and no image nor formatting !

(It maybe displays better on your computer, but I currently cannot install OOo, whether be it on my amd64 or my ppc, and use the righteous kword ! :-)

 Good, but...

Yours is a good idea, in fact I've never seen something similar in any OS.

Anyway I think there is a more important thing to do before your add-on in KDE printer: a real preview using CUPS:

Now, if I select odd pages, draf mode, and two pages per side and select "preview" I'll see the document with all the pages, in color and one page per side, that it's really annoying.

Of course there are many bugs and wishes reported about this important issue.

Your proposal is really good but need to improve all the KDE printer system before implement it.

I don't say that it is perfect but I want to show with wich potential a feature like this COULD have!
Still I don't think that my mock-up is perfect but I think that the idea would be prety cool and maybe even important for regular work.

is a nice Idea but could be developed
further,for example what about booklet
printing ?
(lastpage,page1 on first sheet;
page 2, lastpage - 1 on the rear;
lastpage - 2 , page 3 on second sheet;
page4, lastpage - 3 on the rear;
and so on.....)

Copmlete algorithm for booklets:
assuming you want to print N page,
K is the next multiple of 4 after N
(pages from N+1 to K are empty).

Algorithm is :
sheet 1 side 1:
pages: K , 1
sheet 1 side 2:
pages: 2 , K-1

sheet 2 side 1:
pages: K-2 , 3
sheet 2 side 2:
pages: 4 , K-3

This is useful to print 4 pages on a sheet
(2 pages in 1) and still have readability.....

 Printing Pictures

Hei great idea. I would like to suggest a feature to customize printing of multiple pictures. It would be nice if there is a feature to arrange multiple pictures on a single sheet ( Like in Picassa ). I don't know about any kde app which do the same.
