Description:

This menu with 2 columns allows to have shortcuts to main applications and actions in the start menu (left panel), without losing the classical "All Applications" Menu (right panel).

The Menu is displayed with two panels:
the left panel shows the shortcuts to basic apps or actions;
the right panel shows all the apps classified by categories.
When we click on another category than "All Apps", for example on "Documents", the content of the right column changes instantly.

This K Menu with two panel would be a way to have less shortcuts on the desktop or on the taskbar by putting main apps and actions shortcuts in the K Menu, but without slowing down the users who want to have directly the menu with all apps listed by categories (like in the current KMenu). Of course, we should have the possibility to use the normal KMenu.

actually "Main Actions" in the 3rd screenshot should be "recently used or most used applications" similar to kmenu right now. The Items of "Main Actions" are definitely no actions... compare it to konqueror's right click handling on files. there are actions like "open with, delete , cut, paste, change resolution, what ever. Configuration, Programs Manager, Updates are tools or applications just like Instant Messaging/Kopete in the next row.

Definitely kmenu needs 2 columns! my kmenu is just to big for 1280x1024 resolution already, especially with big icons inside kmenu.

lucky, there will be a totally rewrite of kicker, and its libs in kde4.. things like "kmenu" will be easily created while superkaramba is integrated in kicker libs. if i get it right.. ;)

i would rather propose doing away with kmenu and making 3 seperate new menus:
Actions
Apps
Locations

Apps could be like your proposal...

# cd /usa/whitehouse
# rm -rf *

 no programs submenu

Well, *I* want my application groups to be top level and not in an extra programs sub menu like in Windows XP (I get mad about it every time I'm forced to use XP). If this really should be so popular that it will be added to KDE I hope it will be optional.

Want excellent hardware recognition and an easy way to install Debian Sid? Get KANOTIX!

I think that the type of menu should be configurable too.
Infact, some people loves smallers menu in particular because they have a low video resolution.

Another idea, is to make possible display not only apps in the right panel but other optional informations (email, IM contacts and something like that) too.
I've seen a similar thing in another mockup...

 Good idea

I think this would be a very good idea. -As long as it is customizable; preferably, skinnable as well. It would also be nice if the sections were floating; as in, each area of the menu could be moved to different positions within the menu. -That would most likely be from kcontrol.

My final suggestion would be themes that do not need to be programmed, or maybe a wizard to convert the images to a script. That would allow everyone to make a custom menu, without having to program, and keep the speed up and cpu usage down.
