Description:

The idea is to display in the same window some locations of the system that we often use (for example Personal Files and Devices). We could display which location we want by configuring it in KControl.

This "overall view" is a kind a summary of the most important locations used by the user (for example "/home/user/", "media:/" and "remote:/").
The locations displayed in this "overall view" and their order would be customizable in Kcontrol.

I think it might allow to work faster with the filesystem when we have to change very often of location.

It's the upcoming Suse 10.1 as of beta 8. The final version is to be released the 13th of April, that is, if there are no changes to the roadmap: http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap

not very innovating
and makes me think about "This Computer" on Windows systems,
but if you make it different from a Windows look,
then it might be worth it to integrate it.

Try to make another mockup that looks less like old Windows to convince me :)

Hi, actually, you could choose which locations you want to display, the order and the title. I tried to make a mockupd that can "speak" to the most people, so I decided to put the classic "Personal files (/home/user/), Drives (media:/) and Network (remote:/)".
But for me I would probably use other locations, such as "Local server (/srv/www/htdocs/)", "Network disk (ftp://192.168.-.-/)" and "2nd Account (/home/work/)". I would have an "overall view" that allows me to work faster, however I think that if I had put that on the mockup, it would have been less "talking". So you can have an infinity of possibilities.

Konqueror is a file browser and document viewer. Why to show info about printers or fonts in Konqueror? there is not a better place for them like "KDE Control Center"?

If you tell me where you see information about fonts?
The idea was to make all common places available from one easily accessible place - like "My Computer" on the desktop.
And it doesn't display the specs of your printer, but it lets you view the printer queues.

And btw, I don't think that everything just has to not look like Windows, there are some really good things about Windows - and it's not a bad thing to (partly) copy those.

This is exactly what I can't understand, IMHO the printer queues or the installed fonts ARE NOT PLACES.

A place is "something" where you can store or get a file or document, just it.

IMHO is a big error Konqueror to show all these stuf like printer queues and fonts, there are much better places to show them and not overloading Konqueror with things that nobody uses.

Why should Konqueror show that stuf? just because it shows it today? Konqueror shows too an inusable amaroK sidebar, but I hope the future Konqueror will eliminate things like that.

As I said, it's not about displaying fonts. And in some way, the printer queue is a place. It's a place that lists you all documents (here's what you want :P ) that are currently being printed out.
On the other hand, a place is not necessarily something that contains files, just like you and me live at a place called city - and we are not files.

you misunderstand something. it is not konqueror that shows the infos. they are plugins that shows the infos. like the file tree which is shown on the left navigation panel if you shows it. it is a plugin too, just a plugin. so, if you remove all the plugins, you still would have a full fledged konqueror with all the possibilities it had before (loading plugins and such) but without plugins like showing printer queues. if there is a amarok sidepanel, konqeuror doesn't get one line of code in addition.

and btw, konqueror isn't just a filemanager and document viewer. it can display kparts which are mini application which can in turn display what they want.

so tell me one argument why to not write plugins which enhance functionality of konqueror and at the same time doesn't reduce its stability because if the plugins are ugly, you can remove them.
just one argument and i'll be quiet.

Yes, of course, I know it. But the problem is that apps like amaroK includes and add by default an inusable sidebar in Konqueror.

Yes, Konqueror (like any KDE app) could be "anything". The question is: should it be ALL just because it CAN?

The really useful kparts in Konqueror are these who just show a document (so Konqueror = any document viewer).

Other kind of apps could be useful in Konqueror, but no all kind of them. So, konqueror could use any kpart (because it can), but is it a good idea konqueror to use any Kpart?

Of course they could (and should) exist any kind of pluggins for Konqueror, because Konqueror (as any KDE app) should be very configurable and powerful for an advanced user. The problem is when Konqueror includes by default too much innecesary pluggins for common users (like amaroK, "Printers" o "Fonts" sidebars).

Looks nice.

But it actually is a collection of folders. I suggest to make this a separate view for konqueror.

I can imagine several places where i'd like to use this view (home folder for example).


This view would show contents of current folder's subfolders and maybe the files too (archives, .desktop files).

The mockup then could be implemented as a collection of symlinks, or .dekstop files.

This function does exist, in SuSE Linux 10.1. Just go to "sysinfo:/" and you will get a similar view.
