Poor knock-off

Although the theme is ok, it would have been better if it hadn't been a knock-off.

Good
Jun 9 2005  on content Orange Velvet

It looks good, I like the tabs and the text color, but I'm not too keen on the scroll bar. It seems flat and a bit out of place. It seems to be attempting to be more beveled, but it is flat instead. It is in contrast with all the other orange elements that seem to be very glossy and look a lot like gel. The arrow buttons I especially dislike--they feel out of place the most.

Other than that, it's good.

Metacity and Buttons
May 18 2005  on content Neos

The Metacity theme has some issues with the buttons. They are cut off on top and sides a wee bit. I'm not too keen on the button style altogether anyway, the black borders kill it. Other than those two critiques, I like this.

Dark themes
Apr 15 2005  on content Clearlooks

Dark themes are much better now, but there is still room for improvement. I'll show you what I mean.

http://img37.echo.cx/img37/354/darktheme5cr.png

The problem is the buttons and the scroll bar. It's really hard to see them as it is, but you can find them by moving the mouse over the button or scroll bar. For the buttons this looks good, but for the scroll bar it looks ugly. It uses a gradient of the current color of the scroll bar and purple (I suppose for consistency with the buttons), and this looks ugly.

There is a contrast option in the gtkrc file, but setting it to anything higher than 1 or 2 makes the toolbars look bad (ugly bright lines, wouldn't be so bad but one of the lines is 2 pixels thick).

If there was a way to separate the scrollbar/button contrast setting from the rest, than it would be complete. Although, it would be nice to be able to set the brightness of the highlights as well (the highlights used to be completely white in 0.4, which you updated to be a bit more sane).

If these issues get resolved, than CL would be completely Dark Theme friendly.

Request
Feb 27 2005  on content Clearlooks

Clearlooks is a nice engine, but last night I found one of its weak points. The engine is not very dark theme-friendly. I use a mixture of the Tenebrific GTK theme and the Rmilk-Black Metacity theme, and I was hoping to make a dark theme similar to Tenebrific; however the highlights can't be changed, and it would have too much contrast if it was just black on white. Also, the subtle differences in color from the menubar or toolbar to the rest of any given window is not there. Maybe it's a lack of understanding on how to make the theme, because this is the first time I've tried making a theme using any engine. I spent a bit of time just figuring out what things like fg[ACTIVE] changed :P.
In conclusion, I'd like to request that you make clearlooks a bit more dark theme-friendly. If you did that it would make my day.

Nice, but...
Feb 24 2005  on content Milky Smooth

Not that unique, just another white/grey theme. The lines are shamelessly copied from previous Mac or Mac-like themes. There are about a dozen themes that look like this, so you'll need more than lines to distinguish it from those other ones.

Myself, I prefer dark themes. Infact, I use a combination of Rmilk-Black metacity with Tenebrific gtk2 for my environment. When one uses a computer alot, and at all during the night, one appreciates dark themes. They really make a difference on the eyes.
