| ![-](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: where Apr 12 2006 on content Clickable slashes in path bar(filemanag) | Hi, actually I noticed that Konqueror was a very good filemanager because the autocompletion of the address bar allows to gain time: you just have to type the first letter(s) of the directory that you want and a list with all the directories starting with the same letter(s) is displayed.
In the Open/Save_As Dialog of Gnome apps (The Gimp, Inkscape..), there is an address bar with buttons. That also allows to gain time, without having to use the keyboard. However the problem is that we _cannot_ use the keyboard (or I din't find how) or copy-paste a location, what can be quite frustrating.
I found both ideas good (of KDE apps and Gnome apps), and in autumn 2005, when I had nothing else to do, I drawed with Inkscape an address bar that would behave normally, except that we could click on the slashes. A few month later when I got on KDE Look I noticed a new KDE4 Brainstorm category, so I improved my svg mockup and I posted it with the name of "clickable slashes".
In fact, the first idea was to have buttons in the address bar on which we could click to display a list of the directories. But it didn't resolve the problem that we couln't change the location directly by editing the address bar with the keyboard or copy-paste an URL.
The second idea was to have button on which we could click to display a list, and double-click to change the buttons name with the keyboard, so to change the location (e.g. if on the button it's written "images" and you edit it into "videos", you'll go to the videos folder). But we still cannot copy-past an URL.
The third idea is the «clickable slashes». The problem is that it can be difficult for certain persons to click on the slash (or with a notebook touchpad). A solution could be to make adjustable the width of the clickable slashes in KControl.
A fourth idea, in the first comments page, Lucher spoke about some CDE apps that had buttons under each directory of the address bar. I'll try to do a mockup of that. The inconvient is this would take more place. |

Cause if you go into "KControl>KDE Components>File Association", and you look for the "application/x-tgz" filetype, you will se that it's associated to the extentions ".tar.gz" & ".tgz".
The system would use this list to recognize the known extentions which to apply a specific style.
That was a good question because I didn't mention this case in the description. I'll add that. |

I tried to make a mockupd that can "speak" to the most people, so I decided to put the classic "Personal files (/home/user/), Drives (media:/) and Network (remote:/)".
But for me I would probably use other locations, such as "Local server (/srv/www/htdocs/)", "Network disk (ftp://192.168.-.-/)" and "2nd Account (/home/work/)". I would have an "overall view" that allows me to work faster, however I think that if I had put that on the mockup, it would have been less "talking". So you can have an infinity of possibilities. |

| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | windowsXP start menu Mar 18 2006 on content A K Menu with two columns | I know that there are some similarities with the WindowsXP start menu, however I think this "2 panels KMenu" has more flexibilty than the Windows XP Menu.
Personally, the first thing I do when I install Windows XP, that's to desactivate the "New Windows XP Menu" and to activate the "Classic Menu". So I don't want a "Windows XP Menu" in KDE: I really prefer the KDE 3.5 Menu.
However, I think it would be useful to have a menu where we could access the main tasks (Web browsing, Media Player, Updates) more directly, without losing the list of the Applications sorted by categories (by putting this list in a right panel). I think this "2 panels KMenu" could be useable, and is more subtle than an imitation of the Windows XP Menu.
What is difficult to say, that's if this "2 panels KMenu" would really be more efficient than the normal KMenu. Maybe I would directly disable it after having used it for only one day :) |
| ![.](/img/trans.gif) | | Re: slashes too thin Feb 26 2006 on content Clickable slashes in path bar(filemanag) | Hi,
yes, this thinness is a problem, that is quite difficult to resolve. We can:
- As you said, click on the directories names instead of clicking on the slashes.
But if we want to keep the characteristics of a normal URL bar, clicking with the Left Button on a directory name has to insert the cursor where we've clicked, and a Double Click has to select the whole path.
However, maybe it would be possible to use the right click or the middle click:
by inserting the list of the available directories into the Right Click menu; or by displaying the list when clicking with the Middle Click, that is at present used to Past a text in the URL bar.
- Make bigger "clickable slashes". The disadvantage is that there would be less directories names shown at the same time in the URL bar, because of the place taken by the bigger clickable slashes.
- Make one "clickable slash" bigger when, and only when, the cursor is very close to it, or over it. So, there is maximum one slash that is bigger at a precise moment. The disadvantage is that when we are moving the cursor over the path bar, this effect of "normal-bigger-normal shlash" that "shakes" the text in the URL bar can be irritating.
Here are some elements of answer. If someone has got an idea, don't hesitate to post it :)
I hope my English is quite comprehensible. If you want more precisions, I will willingly answer. |
